Dominica Grammar School
The Dominica Grammar School (DGS) is a public co-education secondary school in Roseau, Dominica, established in 1893, one of the oldest educational institutions on the island. Contrary to its name, the school no longer functions as a traditional grammar school, as it has expanded its curriculum beyond its historical scope. History The birthplace of the Dominica Grammar School was in "Lagon", Roseau. It was in the building known as No. 66 Queen Mary Street, now occupied by Mr Ashton Piper, Barrister-at-Law and Solicitor. Up to 1877, the plot of land measuring just over , at the corner of what was then Marlborough Street and Grandby Street, was vacant. It was purchased at public auction by a merchant named Henry Hamilton on behalf of his friend Alexander Robinson. The latter started to build on the plot of land in 1878. Edison James
Edison Chenfil James (born October 18, 1943, in Marigot) is a Dominican politician who was the prime minister of Dominica from June 14, 1995, to February 3, 2000, as well as the member of parliament for the Marigot constituency from 1990. He graduated from the Dominica Grammar School. He has a BSc degree in botany from the University of East London, a MSc degree in biochemistry from the University of Reading and a post graduate diploma in crop protection technology from Imperial College. He worked in a number of local and regional institutions including the Caribbean Development Bank, but it was as manager of the Dominica Banana Marketing Company that he rose to prominence on the island. Crispin Sorhaindo
Crispin Anselm Sorhaindo OBE (23 May 1931 – 10 January 2010) was the fourth President of Dominica. He served from 25 October 1993 until 5 October 1998. Early life Sorhaindo was born in 1931 in the village of Vieille Case. He attended the Vieille Case Government School, where his father served as the principal, and subsequently attended the Dominica Grammar School. After some years in the public service, he was sent to study abroad at the Overseas Service Course at Trinity College, Oxford, in 1956 and 1957, as well as the Royal Institute of Public Administration in 1963 and 1964, where he undertook the Public Finance Course. Roosevelt Skerrit
Roosevelt Skerrit (born 8 June 1972) is a Dominican politician who has been Prime Minister of Dominica since 2004; he has also been the Member of Parliament for the Vieille Case constituency since 2000. Regionally, he has served as the chairman of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and most recently as chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in 2010. Skerrit is currently the longest-serving prime minister of Dominica. Grayson Shillingford
Grayson Cleophas Shillingford (25 September 1944 – 23 December 2009) was a West Indian cricketer who played in seven Test matches from 1969 to 1972. His cousin Irvine Shillingford also played Test cricket for the West Indies. Grayson Shillingford attended Dominica Grammar School in Roseau. He was a right-arm fast bowler who played for Windward Islands from 1967–68 to 1978–79. He toured England with the West Indies team in 1969 and 1973. His best first-class figures were 6 for 49 for the Combined Windward and Leeward Islands team against Trinidad in 1971–72. He received Dominica's Sisserou Award of Honour in 2009. Vernon Shaw
Vernon Lorden Shaw (13 May 1930 – 2 December 2013) was the fifth President of Dominica, in office from 1998 to 2003. Shaw was an alumnus of the Dominica Grammar School and Trinity College, Oxford. He was a career civil servant, rising to the post of Cabinet Secretary in 1977, and retiring in 1990. He became resident tutor of the University of the West Indies in 1991. Shaw was elected to a five-year term as President by the House of Assembly on 2 October 1998, as the candidate of the United Workers' Party (UWP). The secret ballot, party-line vote was 18–13. He took office on October 6, 1998, following the expiration of President Crispin Sorhaindo's single five-year term. Clarence Seignoret
Sir Clarence Henry Augustus Seignoret (25 February 1919 – 5 May 2002) was the third President of Dominica. Biography Born in Roseau, Seignoret was educated at the Dominica Grammar School and at college in Saint Lucia before he started working as a civil servant in Dominica from 1936. From 1958 to 1960 he undertook an international public service course in Oxford University. On returning to Dominica he resumed his governmental career, acting on various occasions as first Secretary to the Cabinet and substitute to the President. Windward Islands Cricket Team
The Windward Islands cricket team is a cricket team representing the member countries of the Windward Islands Cricket Board of Control. The team plays in the West Indies Professional Cricket League (including the NAGICO Regional Super50) under the franchise name Windward Islands Volcanoes. It includes the islands that were known as the British Windward Islands except for Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, who have their own teams. Thus, it includes Dominica (technically one of the Leeward Islands, but as it was part of the Windward Islands colony from 1940 until independence, its cricket federation remains a part of the Windward Islands), Grenada, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Edward Scobie
Edward Vivian Scobie (23 May 1918 – 14 November 1996) was a Dominican-born journalist, magazine publisher and historian. He is best known for his research into the history of black people in Western Europe and his 1972 seminal book ''Black Britannia: A History of Blacks in Britain''. Early life and career Scobie was born Vivian Edward George Dalrymple in Roseau, Dominica. He was educated at the Dominica Grammar School.
