''Doing God's Work – A Creation Compilation'' is a various artists compilation album of British indie music released in 1987 by Creation Records. The album was released in vinyl and CD format. Background It is with ''Doing God's Work'' that Creation "demonstrates the label's first signs of branching out sonically," says Andy Kellman at '' AllMusic'', "such that the label no longer remained a rumpus room for '' Nuggets'' fans." Artists Phil Wilson remembers that in 1987 Alan McGee wanted Creation to be the UK equivalent of the Elektra label, "and he reckoned I could be Creation's Country Joe." Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Momus (musician)
Nicholas "Nick" Currie (born 11 February 1960), more popularly known under the artist name Momus (after the Momus, Greek god of mockery), is a Scotland, Scottish musician and writer. For over forty years he has been releasing albums on labels in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan. In his lyrics and his other writing he makes use of continental philosophy, and has built up a personal world he says is "dominated by values like diversity, orientalism, and a respect for otherness". The Byrds
The Byrds () were an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1964. Jangle Pop
Jangle pop is a subgenre of pop rock or college rock that emphasizes jangly guitars and 1960s-style pop melodies. The Jasmine Minks
The Jasmine Minks are a British indie pop band, whose early singles were amongst the first releases by Creation Records. History Formed in Aberdeen in 1983, the band were initially a quartet of Jim Shepherd (guitar/vocals), Adam Sanderson (vocals/guitar), Martin Keena (bass guitar), and Tom Reid (drums/vocals). After sending a demo tape to ''Melody Maker'', the band were recruited by Alan McGee to record for the fledgling Creation label. Their first single, "Think!" was recorded for £50 at Alaska Studios, Waterloo. The 4 piece line up was augmented by keyboards from Dave Musker, and the single produced by Joe Foster. Fontana Records is a record label that was started in the 1950s as a subsidiary of the Dutch Philips Records. The independent label distributor Fontana Distribution takes its name from the label. History Fontana started in the 1950s as a subsidiary of the Dutch Philips Records; when Philips restructured its music operations, it dropped Fontana in favor of Vertigo Records. ''The House of Love'' is the eponymous debut album by the British alternative rock band the House of Love. Released in June 1988 by Creation Records, the album was a critical success. "Shine On" is a single by the House of Love, written by Guy Chadwick. It was originally released in 1987, when the band was on Creation Records, but failed to reach the UK top 100. The band's subsequent singles peaked outside of the top 40 until, in early 1990, "Shine On" was re-recorded, produced by Tim Palmer and re-released. This time the song peaked at #20 in the UK, #24 in Ireland, and #171 in Australia. Their follow-up single, "Beatles and the Stones", was their final single to reach the UK top 40. The song is used for the skateboarder Corey Duffel's part in the Osiris Shoes video "Feed The Need" and in ''Trigger Happy TV'' series 1. In 2006, the song was covered by Apoptygma Berzerk and Stephan Groth.
