Dodge 'Em
''Dodge 'Em'' is a driving-themed maze game programmed by Carla Meninsky and published in 1980 by Atari, Inc. for the Atari VCS (later renamed to the Atari 2600). Similar to Sega's 1979 '' Head On'' arcade game, ''Dodge 'Em'' is played on a single screen of four concentric roadways. Sears released the game for the "Sears Video Arcade" as ''Dodger Cars''. The ''Dodge 'Em'' cartridge includes three versions of the game, accessible through the ''Game Select'' switch on the Atari 2600. The first game is for one player, and the remaining two are for two players. The second game has the two players, one player playing the role of the player's car, alternating turns. Atari, Inc. was an American video game developer and home computer company founded in 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney. Atari was a key player in the formation of the video arcade and video game industry. ''Dodge Racer'' (also shown in the manual as ''Dodge-Racer'' and ''DodgeRacer'') is a maze video game programmed by Rob Re for Atari 8-bit computers and published by Synapse Software in 1981. It is a clone of the 1979 arcade video game '' Head On'', where the player drives around a rectangular track, divided into lanes, collecting dots and avoiding collisions. ''Dodge Racer'' was the second release from Synapse and the company's first game. Gameplay A player-controlled car and enemy car move in opposite directions through a course of concentric rectangles. When a car passes through gaps in each of the four cardinal directions, it can change lanes. The goal is to collect all the dots without crashing into the other vehicle. Carla Meninsky is a former video game designer and programmer active during the early years of the Atari VCS. Along with Carol Shaw (creator of ''3-D Tic-Tac-Toe'' and ''River Raid''), Meninsky was one of three female engineers at Atari, Inc. to develop video game cartridges. She later became an intellectual property lawyer. Background Meninsky's mother was a programmer and Carla learned programming in high school, but she switched from mathematics to neuropsychology and brain modelling at Stanford University. Given her artistic bent, Meninsky was particularly interested in vision and eventually veered back toward programming and a lifelong dream of creating animation tools. She began her college career at Stanford studying math but eventually switched to psychology because it sounded more exciting.
