Burlington is an incorporated town in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is a small fishing and lumbering community on Route 413 at the north side of the mouth of Green Bay. Burlington is located approximately 40 km from Baie Verte. History Burlington was once named Northwest Arm, and was permanently settled in the mid-19th century. The community was renamed in the early part of 1915 due to a mix-up in the mail service. After many residents complained that their mail was sent to another community with a similar name, the town leaders felt the need to have a name change. Out of three separate entries, 'Burlington' was chosen. There was no large industry in the 19th century. The early settlers fished for cod and cleared land to grow potatoes, cabbage and small fruits. LaScie, Newfoundland And Labrador
La Scie (sometimes spelled "LaScie") is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The town had a population of 820 in the Canada 2021 Census, down from 872 in 2016. History The name of the town originates from French fishermen who called it ''La Scie'', which in French means "The Saw". This is reference to the silhouette of the hills around the town which resemble the teeth of a saw blade. This is also depicted in the town's seal. LaScie was settled by Irish and English fisherman after the French relinquished their fishing rights to the French Shore in 1904. By 1911 the population had grown to 429. The United States Air Force built and operated a radar station in the area from 1957 to 1961. On November 7, 2020, a fire destroyed a town building which housed the community's fire hall, the local ambulance service, a library, family resource centre and council chambers. King's Point is a town on the north shore of the southwest arm of Green Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. King's Point is by road ( Route 391) from Springdale, and from the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1). History The earliest inhabitants of King's Point were the Maritime Archaic Indians and later the Beothuk Indians. Before the 1860s the area was a source of timber for French fishermen and naval vessels occupying the "French Shore". In the 1860s the first known European settler, James King, established fishing premises and a dwelling on the Point. This is how the community got its name. His dwelling was destroyed by high tides shortly after and abandoned by King. As early as 1870, King's Point has had a telegraph office. Coachman's Cove is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The town had a population of 111 in the Canada 2021 Census. History Coachman's Cove was originally named ''Pot d'Etain'', which means Tin Pot Islands. It was incorporated in 1970 and is located north of Baie Verte on the east side of a promontory near a tip of the Baie Verte Peninsula. Its name was derived from Irish settlers who were living there year-round in the 1860s. The first permanent settlers to arrive in Coachman's Cove possibly came at the invitation of the French in the early 19th century to act as guardians of French stages and fishing equipment during the winter months. These settlers decided to stay and establish a permanent fishing settlement. Like other communities on the Baie Verte Peninsula, Coachman's Cove had a double identity and double population.
