District Of Manitoulin
Manitoulin District is a district in Northeastern Ontario within the Canadian province of Ontario. It was created in 1888 from part of the Algoma District. The district seat is in Gore Bay. It comprises Manitoulin Island primarily, as well as a number of smaller islands surrounding it, such as Barrie, Cockburn, and Great La Cloche islands. Previously it included the municipality of Killarney on the mainland, until this was transferred to Sudbury District in the late 1990s. Subsequently, more mainland portions were added to Killarney and these, together with Unorganized Mainland Manitoulin District, were also transferred to Sudbury District in 2006, about in all. Geography The district has an area of , making it the smallest district in Ontario. The Province of Ontario has 51 first-level administrative divisions, which collectively cover the whole province. Area codes 705 and 249 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for most of Northeastern Ontario, northeastern and central Ontario in Canada. Area code 705 was created in a 1957 split from portions of the area code 613, 613 and area code 519, 519 numbering plan areas. Goat Island (Ontario)
Goat Island is a small island in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in the town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands in the Manitoulin District. Transportation Highway 6 passes through the island, crossing from Manitoulin Island via the Little Current Swing Bridge. Built in 1913 as a railway bridge, it has carried road traffic since 1946. At the other end of the island, a fixed bridge carries the highway to Great La Cloche Island. The only other road on the island, Goat Island Road, is a service road that circles around the west end of the island. Goat Island Road has cul de sac that ends on the northwest corner of the island and separate by a narrow section of the North Channel from the a dirt trail leading off from Highway 6 on Great La Cloche Island. Georgian Bay
Georgian Bay (french: Baie Georgienne) is a large bay of Lake Huron, in the Laurentia bioregion. It is located entirely within the borders of Ontario, Canada. The main body of the bay lies east of the Bruce Peninsula and Manitoulin Island. To its northwest is the North Channel. Georgian Bay is surrounded by (listed clockwise) the districts of Manitoulin, Sudbury, Parry Sound and Muskoka, as well as the more populous counties of Simcoe, Grey and Bruce. The Main Channel separates the Bruce Peninsula from Manitoulin Island and connects Georgian Bay to the rest of Lake Huron. North Channel (Ontario)
The North Channel is the body of water along the north shore of Lake Huron, in the Canadian province of Ontario. It stretches approximately 160 nautical miles (300 km) and is bordered on the east by Georgian Bay, on the west by the St. Marys River, to the north by the eastern Algoma District and part of the Sudbury District, and to the south by the islands of Manitoulin, Cockburn, Drummond and St. Joseph. At its widest point it is over 30 km (20 miles) wide. In addition to Georgian Bay, the North Channel is connected to the main body of Lake Huron by the False Detour Channel and the Mississagi Strait, which separate the above-noted islands. Lake Huron
Lake Huron ( ) is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. Hydrology, Hydrologically, it comprises the easterly portion of Lake Michigan–Huron, having the same surface elevation as Lake Michigan, to which it is connected by the , Straits of Mackinac. Unorganized Mainland Manitoulin District
Unorganized Mainland Manitoulin is a former unorganized area in the Canadian province of Ontario, encompassing the small mainland portion of the Manitoulin District which was not part of the municipality of Killarney. It was dissolved and annexed into Killarney in 2006. It comprised the geographic townships of Carlyle and Humboldt, as well as the unpopulated Indian reserve of Point Grondine. The Sudbury District is a district in Northeastern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario. It was created in 1894 from townships of eastern Algoma District and west Nipissing District. The overwhelming majority of the district (about 92%) is unincorporated and part of Unorganized North Sudbury District. With the exception of Chapleau, all of the district's incorporated municipalities are found in the area immediately surrounding the city of Greater Sudbury to the west, east and south. Killarney is a municipality located on the northern shore of Georgian Bay in the Sudbury District of Ontario, Canada. Cockburn Island is an island and township municipality in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in the Manitoulin District.
