The District Council of Queenstown and Alberton was a local government area of South Australia established in 1864 and abolished in 1898. The council was named for its constituent suburban townships of Queenstown and Alberton (originally Queen's Town and Albert Town, named for Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert). History The council was proclaimed on 20 October 1864 and divided south east to north west by the new Port Road into two wards - one for each constituent township. The inaugural councillors appointed by the governor were James Page, Thomas Bails, Samuel Wilson, John Formby and William Wheewall. On 2 June 1898 the council was amalgamated into the Town of Port Adelaide, the latest in what became a series of annexations of small port-side councils into the larger corporate township. Alberton, South Australia
Alberton is a metropolitan suburb in the west of Adelaide, South Australia, about 20 minutes drive from the city. Part of the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, it is bordered by the suburbs of Rosewater, Queenstown, Cheltenham and Port Adelaide. History Alberton, like Port Adelaide, is rich in historical significance. On 7 March 1839, the South Australian Company was granted private subdivision of preliminary section 423. Section 423 was sold as 'The Town of Albert' and subsequently became 'Albert Town' after Prince Albert, Prince Consort of Queen Victoria. Eventually, 'Alberton' became commonly used and around the turn of the century was officially adopted as the suburb's name. With demand for workers at the Port and homes for these workers needed, late in 1840 there were already 61 houses and 235 residents in Alberton. Queenstown is a north-western suburb of Adelaide about 10.5 km from the CBD, in the state of South Australia, Australia and the city council area of Port Adelaide Enfield. Queenstown occupies a triangular-shaped area of land which is bounded by the Port Road to the north-east, Old Port Road to the south-west and by Webb Street to the north-west. Dry Creek (South Australia)
Dry Creek or Dry Creek Drain is a seasonal stream in South AustraliaWhitworth (1866) p. 69 which passes through the Adelaide suburbs of Modbury, Walkley Heights and Pooraka. The nearby suburb of Dry Creek and Dry Creek railway station are named after the stream. Description In season Dry Creek flows from its source near Yatala Vale in the Mount Lofty Ranges to the Barker Inlet of the Gulf St Vincent via a manufactured drain near Globe Derby Park. The flooded state of the plain either side of Dry Creek after heavy rain is presumed to be the source of the local place name 'Yatala' (as in Hundred of Yatala and Yatala Vale). The name is likely derived from the indigenous word 'yertalla', which means "water running by the side of a river". Port Road, Adelaide
Port Road (and its northern section as Commercial Road through Port Adelaide) is a major road in Adelaide, South Australia connecting the Adelaide city centre with Port Adelaide. It is long, and is designated part of route R1 within central Adelaide, and beyond as route A7. Route Port Road starts at the north-western corner of the Adelaide city centre, at the intersection of North Terrace and West Terrace, and heads northwest, turning north at Thebarton to become part of the City Ring Route, before meeting Park Terrace at Hindmarsh and heading northwest again with its widened median, crossing the North-South Motorway and heading through the suburbs of Woodville and Cheltenham, before it turns northwards at Alberton to cross Grand Junction Road, changing name to Commercial Road and terminating not long afterwards in the centre of Port Adelaide. Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Franz August Karl Albert Emanuel; 26 August 1819 – 14 December 1861) was the consort of Queen Victoria from their marriage on 10 February 1840 until his death in 1861.
