Discovery Island Light
Discovery Island Lighthouse is an active lighthouse built in 1886 on Pandora Hill which is the highest point on Discovery Island in the province of British Columbia, Canada. History The government appointed Richard Brinn to be the first lighthouse keeper. His daughter Mary Ann Croft assisted him. In 1902 after her father died Mary Ann Croft was officially appointed the lighthouse keeper, when she became the first female lighthouse keeper in Canada. In 1932 Croft retired, and moved to Victoria with a pension of $43 a month. She had spent a total of 46 years living on the island. In 1996 the lighthouse was automated after having been manned for 110 years. On September 3, 2004, the foghorn at the lighthouse was deactivated and removed from the station. Vancouver Island is an island in the northeastern Pacific Ocean and part of the Canadian Provinces and territories of Canada, province of British Columbia. Discovery Island (British Columbia)
Discovery Island is located off the eastern side of Vancouver Island and is viewable from Ten Mile Point, near Cadboro Bay, and Oak Bay. Discovery Island Marine Provincial Park occupies the southern portion of Discovery Island, east of Oak Bay. The northern portion of the island is part of Discovery Island Indian Reserve 3, under the control of the Songhees First Nation. Foghorn
A foghorn or fog signal is a device that uses sound to warn vehicles of navigational hazards such as rocky coastlines, or boats of the presence of other vessels, in foggy conditions. Discovery Island Marine Provincial Park
Discovery Island Marine Provincial Park is a provincial park located about east of Oak Bay on the coast of British Columbia, Canada. It is about long and wide and looks out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Discovery Island Marine Provincial Park is only accessible by boat and is popular with kayakers. The nearest marina and official anchorage is located in Oak Bay and the nearest launching ramp is located at Cattle Point. On the east side of the island on Pandora Hill there is a lighthouse which has been automated for the past several years. Pandora Hill is also one of the turning points for the Canada–United States border. The northern portion of Discovery Island is a First Nations reserve. Camping is allowed in the area southwest of Pandora Hill. Campers can set up a tent ( per person per night).
