''Campodea'' is a genus of small, white, bristle-tailed arthropods in the order Diplura. The best known species, ''Campodea staphylinus'', has a wide distribution across much of Europe. Springtails (Collembola) form the largest of the three lineages of modern hexapods that are no longer considered insects (the other two are the Protura and Diplura). Cerci (singular cercus) are paired appendages on the rear-most segments of many arthropods, including insects and symphylans. Many forms of cerci serve as sensory organs, but some serve as pinching weapons or as organs of copulation. In many insects, they simply may be functionless vestigial structures.
