Dilys Powell
Elizabeth Dilys Powell, CBE (20 July 1901 – 3 June 1995) was a British film critic and travel writer who contributed to ''The Sunday Times'' for more than 50 years. Powell was known for her receptiveness to cultural change in the cinema and coined many classic phrases about films and actors. She was a founding member of the Independent Television Authority (ITA), which launched commercial television in the UK. She was also the second female president of the Classical Association. Powell wrote several books on films and her travels in Greece. Early life and education Dilys Powell was born in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, to Thomas Powell (a bank manager) and Mary Jane Lloyd. Dilys Laye
Dilys Laye (born Dilys Lay; 11 March 1934 – 13 February 2009) was an English actress and screenwriter, best known for her comedy roles. Early life Laye was born in Muswell Hill, London, the daughter of Edward Lay and his wife Margaret ('' née'' Hewitt). Her father left the family when she was aged eight to work as a musician in South Africa and never came back. During World War II Laye and her brother were evacuated to Devon, where they were unhappy and endured physical abuse. Laye returned home to a new stepfather and a mother who was keen to transfer her thwarted ambitions to her daughter. After education at St Dominic's Sixth Form College, Middlesex and training at the Aida Foster School, Laye made her stage debut aged 14 as a boy in a play called ''The Burning Bush'' at the New Lindsey Theatre and her film debut a year later as a younger version of Jean Kent in ''Trottie True''. Dilys Price (3 June 19329 October 2020) was a Welsh educator, parachutist, and model who held the record for the oldest female solo parachute jump at the age of 80. She founded the charity Touch Trust to provide art and creative movement activities. Career Until retirement Price was a senior lecturer at the Cardiff College of Education. She specialised in the art of movement and dance and had been taught by Rudolph Laban. From the 1970s she had become involved in applying her knowledge to the education of children and adults with special needs. Her innovations led to a new major option course in Adaptive Physical Education for Special Needs in the Physical Education Department at her college in the 1980s. She was a member of the team that led to the opening of the Wales Sports Centre for the Disabled in the (now) Cardiff Metropolitan University in 1996. Dilys Elwyn-Edwards (née Roberts; 19 August 1918 – 13 January 2012) was a Welsh-language composer, lecturer and accompanist. Biography Dilys Roberts was born on 19 August 1918 in Dolgellau, Wales. She attended Dr Williams' School for Girls, a grammar school which educated girls ages 7–18 from 1878 to 1975. Dilys Breese (born 2 June 1932, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire; died 22 August 2007) was a natural history television producer for the BBC and an ornithologist with the British Trust for Ornithology, who commemorate her contribution by awarding the Dilys Breese Medal, funded by her bequest to them. Breese was brought up in Wales, she was educated at Oswestry Girls' High School, then graduated from St Andrews in 1954, with an MA in English Literature and Language. Radio After graduation, she applied for a position as a trainee studio manager with BBC radio. Dilys Rhys Watling ('' née'' Jones, 5 May 1942 – 10 August 2021) was an English actress, best known for appearing on British television ('' Coronation Street'', ''The Benny Hill Show'' and ''The Two Ronnies''). Early life and education Watling was born Dilys Rhys Jones, the daughter of actor Ion Rhys Jones and Patricia Hicks. She married Alexander Laing, a Dartmouth College graduate, and later professor, in 1936 and became an American citizen. They had one son. Career She was a writer, poet, and artist. Dilys Winn (1939-2016) was an American bookseller who was one of the first to open a bookstore devoted to mystery and detective fiction. Dilys Barbara Winn was born in Dublin on September 8, 1939 and was brought to the United States one year later. She grew up in Perth Amboy, NJ, and graduated from Pembroke College. Winn worked as an advertising copywriter in the late 1960s and then opened her own bookstore, Murder Ink, located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. In 1972, she appeared on the game show '' To Tell the Truth''. In 1977, she published an anthology, ''Murder Ink'', (Workman Publishers) which won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers Association of America. Dilys Hamlett (31 March 1928, South Tidworth, Hampshire – 7 July 2002, Cupar, Fife) was a British actress. Early life Dilys Hamlett was born on 31 March 1928 in South Tidworth, Hampshire (now in Wiltshire), and developed an early interest in literature and theatre. She studied at the Old Vic Theatre School in the early 1950s and it was there that she met, and married, a fellow student, Caspar Wrede. Dilys Breese Medal
The Dilys Breese Medal is a medal awarded by the British Trust for Ornithology to recognise communicators who help to deliver ornithological science to new audiences. It is named in memory of film maker Dilys Breese, who died in 2007, and was inaugurated in 2009, funded by a bequest from Breese. The medal features a design by Robert Gillmor, showing a robin in front of a TV screen. The inaugural awards were made in November 2009, to six recipients at a ceremony at the House of Lords. Dilys Rose is a Scottish fiction writer and poet. Born in 1954 in Glasgow, Rose studied at Edinburgh University, where she taught creative writing from 2002 until 2017. She was Director of the MSc in Creative Writing by Online Learning from 2012 to 2017. She is currently a Royal Literary Fellow at the University of Glasgow. Her third novel ''Unspeakable'' was published by Freight Books in 2017. Dilys Grace Edmunds
Dilys Grace Edmunds (1879–1926), an early twentieth century teacher in India from a Welsh Calvinistic Methodist background, whose fund-raising work supported school building programmes in the Karimanj District of India. Dilys Edmunds was born in London in 1879. Her father was Mr Llewelyn Edmunds, the precentor at Bethel Chapel, Wilton Square, in Islington, London (a chapel built by Welsh Calvinistic Methodists in 1853, rebuilt 1884). Such Welsh Methodists had their origins in the religious revival of the eighteenth century, and had been influenced by George Whitfield and his patron, Selina, Countess of Huntingdon. After attending a school in London, Dilys Edmunds studied at the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth where she gained a bachelor of arts degree, followed by completion of a teachers' training course.
