''Different Drummer'' is a one-act ballet created by Kenneth MacMillan in 1984 for the Royal Ballet. The music is by Anton Webern ( Passacaglia for orchestra, Op. 1) and Arnold Schoenberg (''Verklärte Nacht''). The story is based on the play ''Woyzeck'' by Georg Büchner. Kenneth MacMillan
Sir Kenneth MacMillan (11 December 192929 October 1992) was a British ballet dancer and choreographer who was artistic director of the Royal Ballet in London between 1970 and 1977, and its principal choreographer from 1977 until his death. Earlier he had served as director of ballet for the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. He was also associate director of the American Ballet Theatre from 1984 to 1989, and artistic associate of the Houston Ballet from 1989 to 1992. From a family with no background of ballet or music, MacMillan was determined from an early age to become a dancer. The director of Sadler's Wells Ballet, Ninette de Valois, accepted him as a student and then a member of her company. In the late 1940s, MacMillan built a successful career as a dancer, but, plagued by stage fright, he abandoned it while still in his twenties. Bruce Edward Sansom (born September 1963) is a British former ballet dancer, and assistant artistic director and ballet master at San Francisco Ballet. Bruce Sansom was born in September 1963 in Newbury, trained at the Royal Ballet School, and joined the Royal Ballet in 1982, following performances as Colas in ''La Fille mal gardée'' at the Royal Ballet School's Annual Performance in 1981, and a solo in ''Here We Come'' in 1982. Jonathan Cope (born 1963) is a British ballet dancer. He was a principal dancer at The Royal Ballet until his retirement in 2006, then served as a ''répétiteur'' with the company until 2019. Jonathan Burrows (choreographer)
Jonathan Burrows is a British choreographer. He started his career as a soloist with The Royal Ballet in London, but formed the Jonathan Burrows Group in 1988 to present his own work. The company travelled widely and gained an international reputation with pieces such as ''Stoics'' (1991), ''Very'' (1992), ''Our'' (1994), ''The Stop Quartet'' (1996) and ''Things I Don't Know'' (1997). David Drew (dancer)
David Drew (12 March 1938 – 16 October 2015) was an English ballet dancer and Principal Character Artist of The Royal Ballet. Biography Drew was born in London in 1938. He received his early training in dance at the Westbury School of Dancing in Bristol, before entering professional ballet training at the Royal Ballet School. He was a dancer with The Royal Ballet for the entire duration of his career: he joined the company in 1955 and was promoted to Soloist in 1961 and to Principal in 1974. He retired from The Royal Ballet as a Principal dancer following the 2002/2003 season, but continued to dance with the company as a Principal Character Artist and, in recognition of his long service to the company, he was also awarded the honorary title of Guest Artist. Stephen Jefferies (born 24 June 1951) is a retired ballet dancer, artistic director and choreographer. He was a senior principal dancer for The Royal Ballet and The National Ballet of Canada.
