Dickerson is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Maryland. It is on Maryland Route 28, between Sugarloaf Mountain and the Potomac River. It is a community near the town of Poolesville, Maryland. Dickerson is . History Dickerson was officially founded in 1871. It was named after its first postmaster, William H. Dickerson, who served from 1873 to 1897. The earliest land grant known to have been given out in the land that is now Dickerson was granted to Arthur Nelson: He received in 1739. Most of what is now considered Dickerson originally belonged to Nathan Hempstone. Before the Civil War, Dickerson was little more than a couple roads, a store, and a few houses. Dickerson Whitewater Course
The Dickerson Whitewater Course, on the Potomac River near Dickerson, Maryland, was built for use by canoe and kayak paddlers training for the 1992 Olympic Games in Spain. It was the first pump-powered artificial whitewater course built in North America, and is still the only one anywhere with heated water. It remains an active training center for whitewater slalom racing, swiftwater rescue training, and other whitewater activities. The facility is owned by the NRG Energy company. Except during special events, access requires membership in the Potomac Whitewater Racing Center, a USA Canoe/Kayak National Training Center. Dickerson Generating Station
The Dickerson Generating Station is an 853 MW electric generating plant owned by NRG Energy, located approximately two miles west of Dickerson, Maryland. Description The facility consists of three 182 MW coal-fired steam generating plants, two 147 MW gas and oil-fired simple cycle combustion turbines, and one 13 MW black start and peaking turbine. The three coal-fired units are base-loaded and went into operation in 1959, 1960, and 1962 respectively. Condenser cooling for these units is accomplished with once-through cooling water from the Potomac River at a rate of up to per day. Coal is delivered to the Dickerson Generating Station by CSX Transportation train. Dickerson Chapel is a historic chapel in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Built in 1790, the chapel originally served as the courthouse for Orange County, North Carolina, Orange County until 1844. It housed a Baptist congregation from 1845 until 1862, when it was purchased by a group of Quakers to serve as a school for African-American children. Since 1886 it has housed a congregation of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. History Dickerson Chapel was built in 1790 as the third courthouse for Orange County, North Carolina.
