Charles Heber Dickerman
Charles Heber Dickerman (February 3, 1843 – December 17, 1915) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Early life and education Charles H. Dickerman was born in Harford, Pennsylvania. He attended the public schools of his native village and graduated from Harford University in Harford in 1860. Career He taught school for several years. He studied law, but before qualifying for admission to the bar became bookkeeper for a large coal company in Beaver Meadows, Pennsylvania. He was interested in the coal commission business and slate quarrying in 1868 at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He served as secretary and treasurer of a concern engaged in the manufacture of railroad equipment at Milton, Pennsylvania, from 1880 to 1899. He was interested in banking at Mauch Chunk, Sunbury, and Bethlehem, and in 1897 became president of the First National Bank at Milton, in which capacity he served until his death. Ernie Dickerman
Ernest Miller Dickerman (December 22, 1910 – July 31, 1998) was an American wilderness advocate and conservationist. Known as the "Grandfather of Eastern Wilderness", he was particularly instrumental in securing legal protection for wild land in Virginia and eastern United States. Early life and career Born in Austin, Illinois, Dickerman moved at the age of three to the Adirondacks. When he was six, his family relocated to Richmond, Virginia, where his mother later died from tuberculosis. Dickerman and his two siblings went to boarding schools. He attended Gettysburg Academy in Pennsylvania, and then Oberlin College, graduating in 1931 with a degree in economics. In 1934 he moved to Knoxville to work for the newly established Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Marion Dickerman (April 11, 1890 – May 16, 1983) was an American suffragist, educator, vice-principal of the Todhunter School, and a close friend of Eleanor Roosevelt. Birth and early life Born in Westfield, New York, she studied for two years at Wellesley College before transferring to Syracuse University where she was an avid supporter of women's suffrage. She graduated with a bachelor of arts in 1911 and a graduate degree in education in 1912. Career She taught first at Canisteo, New York, and in 1913 moved to Fulton, New York, where she taught American history at Fulton High School, eventually becoming head of the department. It was here that she met Syracuse classmate Nancy Cook, who taught arts and handicrafts at the same school. Willard Dickerman Straight (January 31, 1880 – December 1, 1918) was an American investment banker, publisher, reporter, diplomat and by marriage, a member of the very wealthy Whitney family. He was a promoter of Chinese arts and investments, and a major supporter of liberal causes. Early life Straight was born on January 31, 1880, in Oswego, New York, the son of two Yankee missionaries to China and Japan, Henry H. Straight (1846-1886) and née Emma Dickerman (1850–1890). Emma was described as an artist who "loved poetry, pictures — beauty in all its forms — but above all else, people." His parents were faculty members at Oswego Normal School. Straight was orphaned at age ten, by the death of his father in 1886 and his mother in 1890. Mount Dickerman, or Dickerman Mountain, is a mountain in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington state. It is located northwest of Barlow Pass along the Mountain Loop Highway. Jonathan Dickerman II House
The Jonathan Dickerman II House is a historic house museum at 105 Mt. Carmel Avenue in Hamden, Connecticut. Built about 1795 by the grandson of an early settler of the area, it is a well-preserved and unusual example of late Georgian architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It is now owned and operated by the Hamden Historical Society. Description and history The Jonathan Dickerman II House is located in northern Hamden, oriented facing west on the south side of Mt. Carmel Avenue just west of the Quinnipiac College campus. It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a gabled roof, central chimney, and clapboarded exterior. Unusual for a two-story house of this period, the front roof face extends to just above the first floor, and flares outward at the eave.
