Dick Leger
Richard Leger (April 18, 1925 – August 17, 1999) was an accomplished Square Dance Caller known as the 'Man with the Guitar' Early years The youngest of 5 children, Dick lost his mother at a very early age and was raised by his stepmothers and older sister Vivian. His father, brothers, and sisters all worked at the Rhode Island Lace Works, one of the oldest lace factories in Rhode Island and Dick joined them at 18 and retired after 25 years. In 1944 he married Susan Durfee from East Providence, RI and they bought a house in Warren, Rhode Island, in a community called Laurel Park. While raising 6 children, Dick began calling at the Park casino on weekends and became the first and only caller of the Rhode Island Merry Makers. One of his first recordings ''Marianne'' became a hit and remained one of his most requested calls. Square Dance
A square dance is a dance for four couples, or eight dancers in total, arranged in a square, with one couple on each side, facing the middle of the square. Square dances contain elements from numerous traditional dances and were first documented in 16th-century England, but they were also quite common in France and throughout Europe. Early square dances, particularly English country dances and French quadrilles, traveled to North America with the European settlers and developed significantly there. Lace
Lace is a delicate fabric made of yarn or thread in an open weblike pattern, made by machine or by hand. Generally, lace is divided into two main categories, needlelace and bobbin lace, although there are other types of lace, such as knitted or crocheted lace. Other laces such as these are considered as a category of their specific craft. Knitted lace, therefore, is an example of knitting. This article considers both needle lace and bobbin lace. While some experts say both needle lace and bobbin lace began in Italy in the late 1500s, there are some questions regarding its origins. Originally linen, silk, gold, or silver threads were used. Warren, Rhode Island
Warren is a town in Bristol County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 11,147 at the 2020 census. History Warren was the site of the Pokanoket Indian settlement of Sowams located on a peninsula within the Pokanoket region. The region consisted of over 60 settlements under the authority of Chief Massasoit (sometimes called Osamequin) who controlled the land from Plymouth to the eastern shores of Narragansett Bay. English colonists Edward Winslow and Stephen Hopkins from Plymouth Colony first visited there in July, 1621. Winslow and John Hampden saved Massasoit's life two years later and gained an important ally and lifelong friend. The colonists set up a trading post by 1632 on the banks of the Kickamuit River where they traded English goods for furs and other items. Roger Williams was banished from Salem, Massachusetts, in January, 1636, and fled to Sowams, becoming ill on the way.
