Diamantveld High School
Hoërskool Diamantveld is a public Afrikaans medium co-educational high school in Kimberley in the Northern Cape province of South Africa and the oldest Afrikaans school in Kimberley. Beginnings It was founded on 28 January 1935 on the then closed Kimberley Teachers Training College hostels’ premises, and the first Head Master was Dr. O’Grady. It was first called Kimberley High School but in 1936 it changed to Diamantveld. Reverend Albertyn, J.R. headed the campaign to have an Afrikaans school established. Head Masters to follow Dr. O’Grady stayed on until 1960. While he was headmaster the school relocated to the premises of Belgravia Primary School. The head masters that followed him was: Cerff, C.F. (1960–1969), Spangenberg, J.P. (1969–1974), Heyns, M.G. (1974–1979), Auret, J.P. (1979–1996), du Toit, J.(1996–2012) and then Hugo, M. The current head master is Victor, L. Kimberley, Northern Cape
Kimberley is the capital and largest city of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is located approximately 110 km east of the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers. The city has considerable historical significance due to its diamond mining past and the siege during the Second Anglo-Boer war. British businessmen Cecil Rhodes and Barney Barnato made their fortunes in Kimberley, and Rhodes established the De Beers diamond company in the early days of the mining town. On 2 September 1882, Kimberley was the first city in the Southern Hemisphere and the second in the world after Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States to integrate electric street lights into its infrastructure. Afrikaans (, ) is a West Germanic language that evolved in the Dutch Cape Colony from the Dutch vernacular of Holland proper (i.e., the Hollandic dialect) used by Dutch, French, and German settlers and their enslaved people. Flippie Van Der Merwe
Philip "Flippie" Rudolph van der Merwe (born 8 July 1957 in Dibeng, Northern Cape Province) is a South African former rugby union player who played six test matches for the South Africa national rugby union team from 1981 to 1989. Playing career Van der Merwe made his provincial debut for WP in 1977 while a student at Stellenbosch University. He was selected on the replacement bench for the Springboks in the first tests against the touring British Lions in 1980. Van der Merwe made his test debut in 1981 against New Zealand on 29 August 1981 at Athletic Park in Wellington. He played his last test match for the Springboks, eight years later, against the World XV at Newlands. Van der Merwe also played in six tour matches for the Springboks. Edwill Van Aarde
Edwill van Aarde (20 December 1938 – 3 January 2024) was a South African television and radio broadcaster and sports commentator. He was the presenter and commentator with the longest uninterrupted service at any broadcaster in South Africa, 50 years (in 2011). Griquas (rugby)
Griquas (known as the Windhoek Draught Griquas for sponsorship reasons since April 2022) are a South African rugby union team that participates in the annual Currie Cup tournament. Their home ground is Griqua Park in Kimberley and they draw their players mostly from Northern Cape Province. They have won the Currie Cup three times – in 1899, 1911 and 1970 – and the Vodacom Cup a joint-record five times. History The rugby team was established in 1886 in the then British colony of Griqualand West. Five years later, during the 1891 British Lions tour to South Africa, Griqualand West played the British Lions in Kimberley. Although they lost 3–0, the British presented the team with the Currie Cup, as they thought that Griqualand West produced the best performance out of the provincial games on their tour. Rudi Steyn
Philippus Jeremia Rudolf Steyn (born 30 June 1967) is a former South African cricketer. He played in three Test matches and one One Day International in 1995. He went to school at Diamantveld High School in Kimberley. He also ran Sportweni Sport Academy, and coaches cricket skills to youngsters alongside fellow former international Corrie van Zyl. Career He made his test debut on 2 January 1995 against New Zealand at Cape Town and opened the batting alongside Gary Kirsten. He added 106 runs with Kirsten for the opening wicket on his debut and scored 38 off 126 balls. His last test appearance was in the one-off test match against New Zealand in March 1995 at Eden Park where he registered his highest career test score with 46 off 193 balls in 220 minutes. Northern Cape
The Northern Cape is the largest and most sparsely populated province of South Africa. It was created in 1994 when the Cape Province was split up. Its capital is Kimberley. It includes the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and an international park shared with Botswana. It also includes the Augrabies Falls and the diamond mining regions in Kimberley and Alexander Bay. The Namaqualand region in the west is famous for its Namaqualand daisies.
