Dewoitine HD.780
The Dewoitine HD.780 was a prototype French fighter-floatplane designed and built from 1938–40. It was a single-seat, single-engined aircraft based on the Dewoitine D.520 land-based fighter. A single example was built but was abandoned unflown, and was scrapped. Design and development In 1938, the French Navy issued a requirement (C1-A75) for a fighter floatplane that could be launched from catapults aboard battleships and cruisers to give fighter protection for the fleet out of range of shore-based fighters. The new fighter would replace the Loire 210, twenty of which had been ordered in 1937, which were yet to enter service. Two designs were evaluated by the French Navy, one from Potez (the Potez-CAMS 170), and one from Émile Dewoitine's design bureau, the Dewoitine HD.780. Dewoitine D
Constructions Aéronautiques Émile Dewoitine was a French aircraft manufacturer established by Émile Dewoitine at Toulouse in October 1920. The company's initial products were a range of metal parasol-wing fighters which were largely ignored by the French Air Force but purchased in large quantities abroad and licence-built in Italy, Switzerland, and Czechoslovakia. The company was liquidated in January 1927, with the only remaining active programme (the D.27) being transferred to EKW in Switzerland. The company was re-established in Paris in March the following year as Société Aéronautique Française (Avions Dewoitine) or SAF. The Hispano-Suiza 12Y was an aircraft engine produced by Hispano-Suiza for the French Air Force before the Second World War. The 12Y became the primary French 1,000 hp (750 kW) class engine and was used in a number of famous aircraft, including the Morane-Saulnier M.S.406 and Dewoitine D.520. Its design was based on the earlier, and somewhat smaller, 12X. The 12X did not see widespread use before the 12Y replaced it and became one of the most powerful French designs on the eve of the war. The 12Z was being designed but this was ended by the fall of France and the German occupation. The 12Y was produced under Hispano-Suiza licence in the Soviet Union as the Klimov M-100. Development The French gun-making company Darne, which became famous for its innovative shotguns, began making military weapons in 1915, when it was contracted by French government to manufacture Lewis machine guns. In 1916 this same company announced the development of its own indigenous design of machine gun. A flap is a high-lift device used to reduce the stalling speed of an aircraft wing at a given weight. Flaps are usually mounted on the wing trailing edges of a fixed-wing aircraft.
