Devil's Elbow ( gv, Glion Cam or Glen Cam the ''Winding Glen'') is a hairpin bend situated on the primary A4 Peel to Kirk Michael ''coast road'' in the Isle of Man parish of German. The A4 road follows the island's west coast and the Devil's Elbow hairpin intersects Glion Cam, a small wooded glen and former quarry situated between Lower Ballakaighen and Skerrisdale Moar. The former Peel to Ramsey line of the Manx Northern Railway also runs parallel to the coast road from Knocksharry to Glen Wyllin near Kirk Michael at this point. This includes the nearby Gob-y-Deigan or the ''Donkey Bank'' and a further railway embankment at Lady Port on the western-edge of Glen Cam which is 70 ft high formed of 50,000 cubic yards of excavated material from a nearby railway cutting. Peel ( gv, Purt ny h-Inshey – Port of the Island) is a seaside town and small fishing port in the Isle of Man, in the historic parish of German but administered separately. German ( gv, Carmane) is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. Manx Northern Railway
The Manx Northern Railway (MNR) was the second common carrier railway built in the Isle of Man. It operated as an independent concern only from 1879 to 1905. History When the people in the town of Ramsey realised their town was not going to be incorporated into the newly promoted Isle of Man Railway (IOMR) network in the 1870s it was left to them to promote their own railway as a link with the rest of the island. The rugged geography of the east coast forced the Manx Northern Railway into an indirect route: first westwards to Kirk Michael and then south to St John's where a junction could be made with the Isle of Man Railway's Peel to Douglas line which opened in 1873. Gob-Y-Deigan Railway Station (Manx: ''Stashoon Raad Yiarn Ghob-Y-Deigan'') was a station on the Manx Northern Railway, later owned and operated by the Isle of Man Railway; it served a beach near Kirk Michael in the Isle of Man and was an intermediate stopping place on a line that ran between St. John's and Ramsey. Description and history The exposed coastal section of the Manx Northern Railway between Peel Road and Glen Mooar viaduct was served by a small halt in the very early days of the railway. This section of line caused the railway company headaches over many years owing to subsidence which was regularly rectified by the dumping of used locomotive ash along the sides of the running line. Highroads Course was a road-racing circuit used for the Gordon Bennett British Eliminating Trial held in the Isle of Man for the 1904 and 1905 Tourist Trophy Race involving touring automobiles and cars. The RAC Tourist Trophy (sometimes called the International Tourist Trophy) is a motor racing award presented by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) to the overall victor of a motor race in the United Kingdom. The 1907 Isle of Man TT races were the inaugural International Tourist Trophy for motor-cycles held on the Isle of Man. The event was held on Tuesday 28 May 1907 over the St John's Short Course consisting of a Single Cylinder and a Twin-Cylinder class. The race was ten laps of the 15 mile 1,430 yards course, a total race distance of 158 miles 220 yards (226.071 km).
