Detroit is an unincorporated community in Dickinson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 102. History The community was named after Detroit, Michigan. In the early years of the county, Detroit was once strongly considered to be the county seat because Abilene was considered to be "too wild" of a town to serve as a center of government. However, Abilene became the county seat and Detroit ceased to grow from that point forward. A post office was opened in Detroit in 1866, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1961. Detroit was a station on the Union Pacific Railroad. Geography Detroit is located halfway between Abilene and Chapman, north of Enterprise. The town is at an elevation of above sea level. K-43 (Kansas Highway)
K-43 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Kansas. The highway runs from K-4 in Hope north to Interstate 70 (I-70) and U.S. Route 40 (US-40) north of Detroit. The entire highway is located within Dickinson County. K-43 is maintained by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), and is a relatively minor highway. K-43 is not part of the National Highway System. The highway was established around 1932, with the northern terminus being the now decommissioned US-40S. In 1962, the route was extended north a bit to a new diamond interchange with I-70. Route description K-43 begins at an intersection with K-4 at the northern city limit of Hope. Enterprise is a city in Dickinson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 708. History The first settlement at Enterprise was in 1868, and Enterprise was laid out in 1872. It was named for the enterprising qualities of the pioneer settlers. The first post office in Enterprise was established in January, 1873. On January 10, 1883, the Enterprise Town Company, capital $50,000, was organized. The following officers were elected: V. P. Wilson, president; John Johntz, vice-president; C. Hoffman, treasurer; T. C. Henry, secretary. In 1887, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a branch line from Neva (3 miles west of Strong City) through Enterprise to Superior, Nebraska. Chapman, Kansas
Chapman is a city in Dickinson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,377. History The first settlement was made at Chapman in 1868, and the same year Jackman's mill was built on Chapman creek a little northeast of the present town. James Streeter and S. M. Strickler laid out the town in 1871. It was named from the Chapman Creek. The first post office at Chapman was established in 1866, but the post office was given the name Chapman's Creek until 1872. 2008 tornado On the evening of June 11, 2008, a ½-mile wide tornado swept through Chapman. The tornado moved from the southwest side of town, through the central business district, and then on out of town. Many buildings and structures in the town suffered extensive damage; most of the downtown area was obliterated and over 60 homes were destroyed.
