DeSoto Parish (French language, French: ''Paroisse DeSoto'') is a List of parishes in Louisiana, parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The parish was formed in 1843. At the 2010 United States Census, 2010 U.S. census, the population was 26,656; at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, its population increased to 26,812. Its parish seat is Mansfield, Louisiana, Mansfield. DeSoto Parish is part of the Shreveport, Louisiana, Shreveport–Bossier City, Louisiana, Bossier City Shreveport-Bossier City metropolitan area, metropolitan statistical area. The U.S. state of Louisiana is divided into 64 parishes (French: ''paroisses'', Spanish: ''parroquias'') in the same manner that Alaska is divided into boroughs, and the remaining 48 other states are divided into counties. Louisiana's usage of the term "parish" for a geographic region or local government dates back to the Spanish colonial and French colonial periods.
