Desmond Choo
Desmond Choo Pey Ching (; born 1978) is a Singaporean politician and former police officer who has been serving as Mayor of North East District since 2017 and Assistant Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress since 2015. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Tampines Changkat division of Tampines GRC since 2015. Education Choo attended Ai Tong School, Catholic High School and National Junior College, before graduating from the University of Chicago, majoring in economics under the Singapore Police Force Overseas Merit Scholarship. The 14th Parliament of Singapore is the current Parliament of Singapore. It opened on 24 August 2020. The membership was set by the 2020 Singapore General Election on 10 July 2020. Png Eng Huat
Png Eng Huat (; born 9 December 1961) is a Singaporean politician and businessman and a member of the opposition Worker's Party (Singapore), Worker's Party (WP). Png became an elected opposition MP of Hougang SMC in the 12th and 13th Parliaments from 26 May 2012, to 23 June 2020 and he was a committee member of the Worker's Party (Singapore), Worker's Party from 2020 to 2022. Although he stepped down as an MP for Hougang SMC prior to the 2020 Singaporean general election, 2020 general election, he still remains active in politics. 2012 Singaporean By-election
A by-election for the Hougang Single Member Constituency in Singapore was held on 26 May 2012 with Png Eng Huat from the Worker's Party as the winning candidate. This followed due to the expulsion of Yaw Shin Leong from the Worker's Party on 15 February 2012, which he decided not to appeal. On 22 February 2012, the Speaker Michael Palmer declared the seat vacant, effective from the date of expulsion, as required by the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore. This was the 16th by-election since the first election, and the first by-election after over 19 years since 1992. This was the first by-election in Singapore since the new millennium and the 21st Century. Low Thia Khiang (; born 5 September 1956) is a Singaporean former politician who served as Secretary-General of the Workers' Party (WP) between 2001 and 2018. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hougang SMC between 1991 and 2011 and Aljunied GRC between 2011 and 2020. He was one of the two opposition MPs in Parliament. Workers' Party Of Singapore
The Workers' Party (abbreviation: WP) is a major centre-left political party in Singapore and is one of the three contemporary political parties represented in Parliament, alongside the governing People's Action Party (PAP) and opposition Progress Singapore Party (PSP). Yaw Shin Leong (; born 2 June 1976) is a Singaporean businessman and former opposition politician of the Worker's Party. He was previously a treasurer and was a Member of Parliament representing the constituency of Hougang after the 2011 Singapore General Elections until he was expelled by the Worker's Party in February 2012. Early life Yaw's father died when he was 13. His widowed mother then scrimped and saved to bring up both his younger sister and himself, and supporting them through tertiary education. Hougang Single Member Constituency
The Hougang Single Member Constituency is a single member constituency (SMC) located in the north-eastern area of Singapore. Its current Member of Parliament is Dennis Tan Lip Fong of the Workers' Party (WP). History The constituency was first formed prior to the 1988 general election and was won by the People's Action Party (PAP) in its debut. However, PAP's representation of Hougang SMC would only last three years, when it lost the seat to Low Thia Khiang after an almost 12% swing to the Workers' Party (WP) during the 1991 general election. 2011 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 7 May 2011. President S. R. Nathan dissolved parliament on 19 April 2011 on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Voting is mandatory in Singapore and is based on the first-past-the-post system. Elections are conducted by the Elections Department, which is under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister's Office. Nomination day was held on 27 April 2011, and for the second election in a row, the PAP did not return to government on nomination day, but it did return to government on polling day.
