Desjardins is a borough of the city of Lévis, Quebec. It was created on January 1, 2002. It has three districts, corresponding to former municipalities: * Lévis (the territory of the pre-2002 city) * Pintendre * Saint-Joseph-de-la-Pointe-De Lévy The pre-2002 city of Lévis had already annexed the former municipalities of Lauzon and Saint-David-de-l'Auberivière in 1989. Desjardins Regional County Municipality
Desjardins was a regional county municipality in the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec, Canada. It and Les Chutes-de-la-Chaudière Regional County Municipality were formed from the division of Lévis County in the 1980s. Desjardins ceased to exist when most of it, along with most of Les Chutes-de-la-Chaudière RCM, amalgamated into the expanded city of Lévis on January 1, 2002. Subdivisions Desjardins RCM consisted of: * Lévis (in its pre-amalgamation borders) * Pintendre * Saint-Henri * Saint-Joseph-de-Lévy Dissolution When Desjardins RCM was dissolved, nearly all of its components amalgamated into the newly expanded Lévis: * Lévis, Pintendre, Saint-Joseph-de-Lévy amalgamated into the newly expanded Lévis and comprised the Desjardins borough of that city. * Saint-Henri remained independent and joined Bellechasse Regional County Municipality. Desjardins Canal
The Desjardins Canal, named after its promoter Pierre Desjardins, was built to give Dundas, Ontario, easier access to Lake Ontario and the Great Lakes system of North America. Although a technological achievement and a short term commercial success, the canal was soon eclipsed by the railway, and Dundas by neighbouring Hamilton. History Context Following the US Revolutionary War the British government felt an urgent need to populate the interior of the province of Upper Canada. The immediate concern was to find a refuge for Loyalists forced from their previous homes in the United States. After the early settlement of Kingston and the lower St. Lawrence River, and the establishment of Butler's Rangers and others in the Niagara peninsula, the possibility also existed for Loyalist communities at the head of Lake Ontario. Desjardins Group
The Desjardins Group (french: Mouvement Desjardins) is a Canadian financial service cooperative and the largest federation of credit unions (french: caisses populaires) in North America. It was founded in 1900 in Lévis, Quebec by Alphonse Desjardins. While its legal headquarters remains in Lévis, most of the executive management, including the CEO, is based in Montreal. Desjardins Credit Union
The Desjardins Credit Union was an autonomous Ontario credit union whose creation was funded by the Desjardins Group in a 2003 buyout of the Province of Ontario Savings Office . As of 2010, the credit union had 50,000 members and CDN$1.4 billion in assets. The company had 19 branches in Ontario and six agencies with a total of approximately 50,000 members. On June 1, 2011, Desjardins Credit Union merged with Meridian Credit Union. A new and similarly-named institution, the Desjardins Ontario Credit Union, was formed 1 January 2020 with the merger of 11 Ontario Desjardins-affiliated credit unions, along with its federation, into one credit union insured by the FRSAO.
