Dervenochoria
Dervenochoria ( el, Δερβενοχώρια) is a former municipality in Boeotia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Tanagra, of which it is a municipal unit. In 2011 its population was 1,869. The municipal unit has an area of 222.938 km2. It covers the southernmost portion of Boeotia. The main village is Pyli. Subdivisions The municipal unit Dervenochoria is subdivided into the following communities (constituent villages in brackets): * Dafni *Pyli (Pyli, Panaktos, Prasino) * Skourta * Stefani History The municipality was created in 1997. Dafni ( el, Δάφνη meaning "laurel", before 1955: Δαριμάρι - ''Darimari'') is a small village in Boeotia, Greece. It is part of the municipal unit Dervenochoria. In 2011 its population was 101. Dafni is situated on the northern edge of Pastra mountain. It is in a sparsely populated agricultural area, with forests to the south. Dafni lies 7 km northwest of Pyli, 9 km east of Erythres and 13 km southeast of Thiva. Pyli, Boeotia
Pyli ( el, Πύλη meaning "gate", before 1927: Δερβενοσάλεσι - ''Dervenosalesi'') is a village and a community in Boeotia, Greece. Its population in 2011 was 652 for the village and 745 for the community, which includes the villages Lefka, Panakto and Prasino. It was the seat of the former municipality of Dervenochoria. The site of the ancient Attic fortress of Panactum is between the villages of Panakto and Prasino (formerly Kavasala). Population Geography Pyli is situated at the eastern edge of the Pastra mountain. It is in a sparsely populated area, dominated by agriculture and forestry. It is 5 km west of Skourta, 19 km north of Elefsina and 20 km southeast of Thebes. The Zoodochos Pigi Church, remnant of a medieval monastery, lies 5 km to the west. Stefani ( el, Στεφάνη, before 1927: Κρώρα - ''Krora'') is a settlement in Boeotia, Greece. Its population in 2011 was 239. Stefani is part of the municipal unit Dervenochoria, which is part of the municipality Tanagra. Population Geography Stefani is situated at the northwestern edge of the Parnitha mountain, and east of the Pastra mountain. It is in a rather sparsely populated agricultural area, with forests to the south. Stefani lies 4 km south of Skourta, 6 km southeast of Pyli, 14 km north of Elefsina and 27 km northwest of Athens. Skourta ( el, Σκούρτα) is a village in Boeotia, Greece. In 2011 its population was 784. Skourta is part of the municipality Tanagra. It is situated northwest of the Parnitha mountain, in a rather sparsely populated area, dominated by agriculture and forestry. Skourta lies 4 km north of Stefani, 5 km east of Pyli and 30 km northwest of Athens. Boeotia ( ), sometimes Latinized as Boiotia or Beotia ( el, Βοιωτία; modern: ; ancient: ), formerly known as Cadmeis, is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of Central Greece. Its capital is Livadeia, and its largest city is Thebes. Boeotia was also a region of ancient Greece, from before the 6th century BC. Mount Parnitha ( ell, Πάρνηθα, , Katharevousa and grc, Πάρνης ''Parnis''/''Parnes''; sometimes Parnetha) is a densely forested mountain range north of Athens, the highest on the peninsula of Attica, with an elevation of 1,413 m, and a summit known as Karavola (Καραβόλα). 2007 Greek Forest Fires
The 2007 Greek forest fires were a series of massive forest fires that broke out in several areas across Greece throughout the summer of 2007. The most destructive and lethal infernos broke out on 23 August, expanded rapidly and raged out of control until 27 August, until they were finally put out in early September. The fires mainly affected western and southern Peloponnese as well as southern Euboea. The death toll in August alone stood at 67 people. In total 84 people lost their lives because of the fires, including several fire fighters. Some of these firestorms are believed to be the result of arson while others were merely the result of negligence. Hot temperatures, including three consecutive heat waves of over 40 °C (105 °F), and severe drought rendered the 2007 summer unprecedented in modern Greek history.
