Dermot Flanagan
Dermot Flanagan is a former Gaelic footballer who played for the Mayo county team and received two All Stars awards. He is the son of Irish Minister and Mayo Gaelic footballer Seán Flanagan. Playing career Dermot Flanagan began playing for the Mayo Minor team in 1979. He played with the Mayo Senior team for 15 years from 1982–1997. During his Senior career, he won seven Connacht titles. Flanagan received All Star awards in 1985 and 1989. Mayo County Football Team
The Mayo county football team (;) represents Mayo in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Mayo GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Connacht Senior Football Championship and the National Football League. Mayo's home ground is MacHale Park, Castlebar. The team's manager is Kevin McStay. Mayo was the second Connacht county to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), following Galway, but the first to appear in the final. Ballaghaderreen GAA
Ballaghaderreen GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon. The main sport played is Gaelic football. When the club was founded in 1885, the town was located in County Mayo and went under the name "Faugh A Ballagh". Ballaghaderreen GAA Club is almost as old as the Gaelic Athletic Association itself. A note in the ''Western People'' newspaper states that the club met in 1886 for a practice match. This was the first meeting of the club since the previous year-1885. The game referred to was played in a field given by Mrs. Deane, a cousin of Mr. John Dillon. The Sports field was situated next door to the Convent and was vested in (and still is) in local trustees. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. GAA GPA All Stars Awards
The Gaelic Athletic Association-Gaelic Players' Association All Stars Awards (often known simply as the All Stars) are awarded annually to the best player in each of the 15 playing positions in Gaelic football and hurling. Additionally, one player in each code is selected as Player of the Year. The awards were instituted in 1971. Since 2011 they have been presented jointly by the Gaelic Athletic Association and the representative body for inter-county players, the Gaelic Players Association. Seán Flanagan
Seán Flanagan (26 January 1922 – 5 February 1993) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and Gaelic footballer. He served as Minister for Health from 1966 to 1969, Minister for Lands from 1969 to 1973 and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry and Commerce from 1965 to 1966. He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Connacht–Ulster constituency from 1979 to 1989. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Mayo South constituency from 1951 to 1969 and for the Mayo East constituency from 1969 to 1977. Early life Flanagan was born in Coolnaha, Aghamore, Ballyhaunis, County Mayo in 1922. James Nallen
James Nallen (born 1973 in Castlebar) is a former Gaelic footballer who played for the Mayo county team. He is the team's record appearance holder with 132. He played in five All-Ireland finals, including an All-Ireland final replay against Meath in 1996, and won two All Stars, in 1996 and 2004. He won a National Football League medal in 2001. However, he never won an All-Ireland medal. He retired from inter-county football in 2010. At club level Nallen had much success with Crossmolina, winning Mayo Senior Football Championships in 1995, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2006, as well as Connacht Senior Club Football Championships in 1999, 2000, 2002 and an All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship in 2001.
