Derbyshire County Cricket Opening Season
Derbyshire county cricket opening season was in 1871 when Derbyshire County Cricket Club first competed in the county competition, having been founded the previous November. Foundation Derbyshire CCC was formed for the county of Derbyshire on 4 November 1870 at a meeting in the Derby Guildhall. The Earl of Chesterfield who had played for and against All England Eleven was the first President, George Henry Strutt was vice president and Walter Boden, who had campaigned for the club's foundation for three years, was secretary. When Chesterfield died in 1871, William Jervis, a well connected lawyer, became president. The main problem that arose from the beginning was that of arranging matches against other counties. Derbyshire County Cricket Club Seasons
This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. However the club continued to play first class counties and most of the players carried on with the club. Robert Smith (Derbyshire Cricketer)
Robert Posnett Smith (1 November 1848 – 1 May 1899), later known as Robert Posnett Stevens, was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1871 and 1884 and was captain of the side from 1876 to 1883. He was a member of the team that played Derbyshire's first match in May 1871. Smith was born in Sawley, the son of John Smith a farmer and his wife Ruth. He was educated at Castle Donington School in Leicestershire and continued farming at Sawley. Smith took part in the very first fixture played by Derbyshire as a county team in the 1871 season, against a Lancashire side who posted the lowest total against Derbyshire in the history of first-class cricket. 1871 English Cricket Season
1871 was the 85th season of cricket in England since the foundation of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Derbyshire County Cricket Club became a first-class club and the last matches were played by Cambridgeshire, who in the days of Bob Carpenter, the first Tom Hayward and George Tarrant had been one of the leading cricket counties. Frederick Reynolds (cricketer)
Frederick Reginald Reynolds (7 August 1833 – 18 April 1915) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Cambridge Town Club and other Cambridge-based sides from 1854 to 1867, and for Lancashire County Cricket Club from 1865 to 1874. Reynolds was born at Bottisham, Cambridgeshire. He became a professional cricketer and was employed at Charterhouse School in 1853 and 1854. He played intermittently for Cambridge Town Club from 1854 to 1867. During this period, he was a professional groundstaff bowler with Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in 1855. From 1856 to 1857 he was at Botesdale, Suffolk. In 1858 he played for the United All-England Eleven (UEE) on tour; in 1859 and 1860 he made similar tours with the All-England Eleven (AEE). In 1861, he joined Manchester Cricket Club as a ground bowler and then became ground manager. In 1865 he made his debut for Lancashire, playing for them until 1874. Arthur Appleby
Arthur Appleby (22 July 1843 – 24 October 1902) was an English first-class cricketer. A left arm round arm medium pace bowler and left-handed batsman, he played 58 matches for Lancashire as an amateur between 1866 and 1887 and in 81 first-class matches in total. He also appeared for Marylebone Cricket Club (1874), the Gentlemen (1867–1887), North of England (1869–1873), Gentlemen of the North (1870–1879), Gentlemen of Marylebone Cricket Club (1873), Gentlemen of England (1874–1878), and RA FitzGerald's XI (1872) and in the Gentlemen to Canada Touring Team (1873). Bowling was his strongest suit, with 9 for 25 against Sussex being his best innings analysis. He took 5 wickets in an innings on 24 occasions and ten wickets in a match 3 times. County Ground, Derby
The County Cricket Ground (usually shortened to the County Ground, also known as the Racecourse Ground; currently the Incora County Ground due to sponsorship) is a cricket ground in Derby, England. It has been the home of Derbyshire County Cricket Club since 1871. The ground was first used by South Derbyshire Cricket Club in 1863 and was initially located within Derby Racecourse, although racing ceased after 1939. The ground has staged two One-Day Internationals: New Zealand against Sri Lanka during the 1983 ICC Cricket World Cup and New Zealand against Pakistan during the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup. Old Trafford is a cricket ground in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. It opened in 1857 as the home of Manchester Cricket Club and has been the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club since 1864. From 2013 onwards it has been known as Emirates Old Trafford due to a sponsorship deal with the Emirates airline. James Billyeald
James Billyeald (20 January 1835 – 8 July 1890) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1871. Billyeald was born at Hyson Green near Nottingham, the son of Thomas Billyeald and his wife Annis Hallam. He became a commercial traveller for wares, groceries and seeds and was living at Wirksworth. Between 1866 and 1870 he played cricket for various teams including Wirksworth Cricket Club, Nottingham Commercial Club and Gentlemen of Derbyshire. In 1871 he was living at Dale House, Wirksworth. Billyeald played for Derbyshire in the 1871 season in their second match against Lancashire in August. Following a promising 11 not-out innings from a tailend position in the first innings, Billyeald switched to the upper order in the second and made 4. Edward Foley (cricketer)
Edward Francis Walwyn Foley (6 October 1851 – 23 October 1923) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1871. Foley was born in Derby, the son of Rev. Edward Walwyn Foley, who was vicar of All Saints Derby from 1848 to 1872. He was educated at Repton School and admitted at Wadham College, Oxford in 1870. He was the youngest member of the Derbyshire team during their inaugural 1871 season. Foley participated in the second match ever played by Derbyshire, against Lancashire in the 1871 season. He was a right-handed batsman. He failed to score a run during the match, though he made one catch in the outfield. Arthur Wilmot
Arthur Alfred Wilmot (14 February 1845 — 12 May 1876) was an English clergyman and cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1871. Life Wilmot was born in Chaddesden Hall, Derby the son of Sir Henry Sacheverel Wilmot and his wife Maria Mundy, sister of Edward Miller Mundy. He was educated at Repton School and University College, Oxford. He took Holy Orders and became a clergyman. He also played club cricket for a number of sides including Free Foresters, Old Oxonians, Staffordshire, Burton and Gentlemen of Derbyshire. He became rector of Morley, Derbyshire in 1871. Wilmot appeared in the second match Derbyshire played as a county side, in the 1871 season, in which he failed to score in either innings but took a catch. Wilmot continued playing for club sides until 1874. He died at Morley at the age of 31. Joseph Davidson (cricketer)
Joseph Davidson (9 August 1846 – 3 December 1901) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1871 and 1874. He was a member of the team that played Derbyshire's first match in May 1871. Davidson was born in Brimington, Derbyshire and became a coal miner. He played as a lower-order batsman in Derbyshire's first ever match as a county side in the 1871 season, which was an innings defeat of Lancashire. He played no part in the 1872 season, but played two matches for Derbyshire against Lancashire in the 1873 season and one match against Lancashire in the 1874 season. Davidson was a right-arm off-break bowler and took six first-class wickets, being overshadowed by Derbyshire's trio of Mycroft, Platts and Hickton.
