Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1898 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for twenty-seven years. It was their fourth season in the County Championship and they won three matches to finish ninth in the Championship table. 1898 season Derbyshire played sixteen games in the County Championship in 1898 and one match against MCC. The captain for the year was Sydney Evershed in his eighth season as captain. William Storer was top scorer with three centuries which he achieved while also bowling to take 28 wickets and being a useful wicket-keeper. George Davidson took most wickets at 65 as well as scoring a century. The season saw many high scores, and against Hampshire in August, four Derbyshire players Levi Wright, William Storer, William Chatterton and George Davidson scored centuries followed by two more from the Hampshire players in the same match. This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. Marylebone Cricket Club
Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is a cricket club founded in 1787 and based since 1814 at Lord's Cricket Ground, which it owns, in St John's Wood, London. The club was formerly the governing body of cricket retaining considerable global influence. In 1788, the MCC took responsibility for the laws of cricket, issuing a revised version that year. Changes to these Laws are now determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC), but the copyright is still owned by MCC. John Hulme (cricketer, Born 1862)
John Joseph Hulme (30 June 1862 – 11 July 1940) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club between 1887 and 1903. Hulme was born in Church Gresley, Swadlincote, Derbyshire. He debuted for Derbyshire in the 1887 season against Marylebone Cricket Club in May, and took two wickets in the second innings. He played six more county matches in the season, but Derbyshire lost first-class status that year. In 1888 with several Derbyshire players he played for an England XI against the Australians and took 7–14. He also took the most wickets for Derbyshire in the 1888 season including 15 wickets in one game against Yorkshire. In 1889 he played several matches for Marylebone Cricket Club. He played consistently and regularly for Derbyshire until it rejoined the championship in the 1895 season. Lancashire County Cricket Club represents the historic county of Lancashire in English cricket. The club has held first-class status since it was founded in 1864. Lancashire's home is Old Trafford Cricket Ground, although the team also play matches at other grounds around the county. Surrey County Cricket Club (Surrey CCC) is a first-class club in county cricket, one of eighteen in the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Nottinghamshire. The club's limited overs team is called the Notts Outlaws. The county club was founded in 1841, although teams had played first-class cricket under the Nottinghamshire name since 1835. Hardy was born in Ilkeston, Derbyshire and was a coal miner when living with his widowed mother in Ilkeston in 1881. Hardy represented Derbyshire in one game during the 1898 season when he kept wicket against Essex. Derbyshire lost the match by a very large margin as the Essex batsmen notched up two centuries and two scores in the 90s before Hardy ended two of their innings with catches behind the stumps. Bourne was born at Moira, Leicestershire, the son of Thomas Bourne, a colliery manager and his wife Rose. They lived at Church Gresley where he was a colliery clerk in 1891. Bourne, with fellow one-timer William Prince, played one match for Derbyshire in the 1898 season which was against Nottinghamshire in July. He was a left-arm medium-pace bowler and took three wickets in over 40 overs during the match. As a left-handed batsman, he batted for just a single innings in the tailend to make 6 runs. William Prince (cricketer)
William Prince (28 March 1868 – 1 June 1948) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1898. Prince was born in Somercotes, Derbyshire, the son of Thomas Prince, a coal miner, and his wife Hannah. In 1881 the family was living at Skegby, Nottingham and Prince himself was a miner at the age of 13. Prince, with fellow one-timer John Bourne, played one match for Derbyshire in the 1898 season in July against Nottinghamshire. A right-arm medium-fast bowler, Prince was given little chance to bowl and took no wickets, but conceded just thirteen from nine overs, the best runs-per-over rate for the team during the entire match. He was a right-handed batsman and as a tailender, put on two runs in the first innings and did not bat in the second innings as the match finished as a draw. James Wright (cricketer, Born 1874)
James Wright (25 March 1874 – 20 August 1961) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1898 and 1905. Wright was born at Newbold, Leicestershire, the son of Thomas Wright, a coal miner and his wife Elizabeth. In 1881 they were living at Castle Gresley, Derbyshire. Wright made his debut for Derbyshire against Lancashire in the 1898 season when he scored 2 and 1. However in the next match, a Derbyshire victory over Hampshire, he made 53 not out. He played a total of five matches in the 1898 season. He played one more game for the club in the 1905 season. Wright was a right-hand batsman and played ten innings in six first-class matches with an average of 10.33 and a top score of 53 not out. He bowled nine overs but took no wickets. He was also an occasional wicket-keeper. Alfred Charlesworth
Alfred Charlesworth (9 May 1865 – 4 December 1928) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1888 and 1898. Charlesworth was born in Simmondley, Derbyshire, the son of John Charlesworth, a stonemason, and his wife Ann. In 1881 at the age of 16, Charlesworth was a clerk. Charlesworth played three matches for Derbyshire in the 1888 season, the first of the seasons when they lost first-class status and made little impression. Charlesworth reappeared for Derbyshire in the 1898 season, making his first-class debut against Essex. Despite being absent hurt in the first innings, he returned during Derbyshire's attempt at bowling out a high-scoring Essex team, in which every player but wicket-keeper Solomon Hardy and opener Sydney Evershed had a crack at bowling, in many cases economical but unsuccessful.
