Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1887
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1887 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for sixteen years and was the last season before they lost first class status for seven years. 1887 season Derbyshire played two county matches each against Lancashire, Yorkshire and Surrey, and one against MCC. They lost all these matches and as a result Wisden decided not to accord them first class status in the following year. However they also played three non first class matches against Essex and Leicestershire and won all three. The captain for the year was William Chatterton who also played for MCC during the season. The top scorer was George Davidson who also took most wickets. During the season Derbyshire played their first home fixture away from the County Ground, when they played Lancashire at the Recreation Ground, Long Eaton. This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. However the club continued to play first class counties and most of the players carried on with the club. George Ratcliffe (cricketer, Born 1856)
George Ratcliffe (born George Ratcliff 1 April 1856 — 7 March 1928) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire from 1887 to 1889. Ratcliffe was born in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, the son of George Ratcliff, a coal miner, and his wife Priscilla. He became a butcher. Ratcliffe made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1887 season in a match in June against Surrey. In this he scored 64, but his average fell from this point in his remaining four first-class matches. At the end of the season Derbyshire left the championship but Ratcliffe continued to play for the club in the 1888 and 1889 season. Ratcliffe was a left-handed middle-upper order batsman and played in 10 innings in 5 first-class matches. He bowled two overs but did not take a wicket. Johnny Briggs (cricketer)
Johnny Briggs (3 October 1862 – 11 January 1902) was an English left arm spin bowler who played for Lancashire County Cricket Club between 1879 and 1900 and remains the second-highest wicket-taker in the county's history after Brian Statham. In the early days of Test cricket, Briggs‘ batting was considered careless, although still very useful. He was the first bowler in Test cricket to take 100 wickets, and held the record of most wickets in Test cricket on two occasions, the first in 1895 and again from 1898 until 1904, when he was succeeded by Hugh Trumble. He toured Australia a record six times, a feat only equalled by Colin Cowdrey. Briggs was a notably short man at about five feet five or 165 centimetres. George Glossop Walker
George Glossop Walker (1860–1908) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1881 and 1898. Early life Walker was born 14 June 1860 at Harthill Grange, Yorkshire, the son of George Walker a farmer. His father maintained a diary, which noted after his fifth birthday, "Mr Hudson sent Georgy a cricket bat and stumps". Walker then went to school, boarding at Whitwell and later was at Broomback House School, Sheffield. He took every opportunity to watch W. G. Grace play against Yorkshire. By 14, he was playing cricket for Whitwell and by 1880 he had a batting average of 27 and a bowling average of just 4. He was also winning prizes as a sprinter. Walker had a county trial for Derbyshire at Chesterfield when he was 18, but he did not play for the side then. Billy Bates
Willie Bates (19 November 1855 – 8 January 1900), known as Billy Bates, was an English cricketer. Skilled with both bat and ball, Bates scored over 10,000 first-class runs, took more than 870 wickets and was always reliable in the field. A snappy dresser, Bates was also known as "The Duke". Life and career Born to a humble family in Lascelles Hall, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, Bates became a professional cricketer for Rochdale in 1873 and made his first-class debut for Yorkshire four years later, taking four for 69 in Middlesex's first innings to begin a ten-year career in the first-class game. He played fifteen Test matches for England between 1881–82 and 1886–87, all of them in Australia. Jimmy Wootton
James Wootton (9 March 1860 – 21 February 1941) was an English first-class cricketer. Wootton was a left-handed batsman who bowled left-arm medium pace. Wootton made his first-class debut for Kent in 1880 against Sussex. Wootton represented Kent in 115 first-class matches in from 1880 to 1890, with his final match for the county coming against the Marylebone Cricket Club. In his 115 matches for the county he scored 1,021 runs at a batting average of 7.34 and a high score of 40. With the ball he took 597 wickets at a bowling average of 17.14, with 49 five wicket hauls, 15 ten wicket hauls in a match and best figures of 8/27 against Lancashire in 1886. Wootton passed the 100 wickets mark in 1884, 1886 and 1887. Out of those the 1886 season was his best as he took 143 wickets at an average of 15.95, with 14 five wicket hauls, 10 five wicket hauls in a match and best figures of 8/27. William Cropper
William Cropper (27 December 1862 – 13 January 1889) was an English cricketer and footballer who played cricket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club between 1882 and 1888 and football, as a centre forward, once for Derby County. He was one of nineteen sportsmen to achieve the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County, but died aged 26 as a result of an accident while playing football for Staveley. Cropper was born at Brimington, Derbyshire, the son of Thomas and Mary Cropper, and was a bricklayer. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1882 season. He also played for the North of England team. He shared most wickets for the club in the 1883, 1884, 1885 and 1886 seasons. In 1886, he played one football match for Derby County. Thomas Mycroft
Thomas Mycroft (28 March 1848 — 31 August 1911) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire and MCC between 1877 and 1887. Mycroft was born in Brimington, Derbyshire, the son of George Mycroft and his second wife Elizabeth Lowcock. His father was an ironstone and coal miner who kept the Red Lion public house at Brimington. Mycroft became an iron moulder. He was playing cricket for Chesterfield in 1871. His first-class career started in the 1877 season, when he made his debut for Derbyshire as wicket-keeper against Kent, scoring eight runs. He played one more match that season. In the 1878 season he played one game for Derbyshire against the All England XI but started playing predominantly for MCC. Edwin Coup
Edwin Coup (9 June 1861 – 2 July 1892), also known as Edwin Coupe, was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club between 1885 and 1887. Coup was born in Ripley, Derbyshire, the son of John Coupe a building contractor and his wife Martha. Henry Slater (cricketer, Born 1855)
Henry Slater (23 February 1855 – 20 November 1916) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1882 and 1887. Slater was born at Heanor, Derbyshire the son of James Slater and his wife Elizabeth Baimbridge. He became a coal miner. He made his cricket debut for Derbyshire in the 1882 season in June against Lancashire in which he took a wicket but scored no runs. His next game was against Nottinghamshire in the 1885 season when again he took a wicket. In the 1886 season he played against MCC and took two catches. George Barrington (cricketer)
George Bainbridge Barrington (20 April 1857 – 29 March 1942) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1880 and 1887. Barrington was born in Pimlico, London, the son of G Barrington. He was educated at Repton School but did not play for the school side as he left in 1873 aged 16. He made several successful appearances for the Derbyshire Friars cricket club and played miscellaneous games for Derbyshire in the 1879 season against Harrow Wanderers and the Derbyshire Colts. He made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in the 1880 season against a team of touring Australians, in which he scored a duck in his first innings but became the top scorer for the team in the second, making 24 before he was run out. Edmund Maynard
Edmund Anthony Jefferson Maynard (10 February 1861 – 10 January 1931) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire from 1880 to 1887 and captained the side for two seasons. Maynard was the son of Edmund Gilling Maynard, of West House, Chesterfield. He was educated at Harrow School, where he was a member of the cricket eleven in 1879 and played his first game for Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1880. He was at Trinity College, Cambridge and played cricket for Cambridge University Cricket Club from 1881 to 1883. After leaving Cambridge he travelled extensively, shooting bear in the Rocky Mountains in 1882, and ibex and other species of deer in India and Kashmir in 1883 and 1884. He played regularly for Derbyshire from 1880 to 1887, appearing in 37 matches. He captained the side in 1885 and 1886 and for part of 1887.
