''Der lustige Krieg'' (''The Merry War'') is a three-act operetta composed by Johann Strauss II. The work was first performed on 25 November 1881 at the Theater an der Wien. Its libretto was by F. Zell ( Camillo Walzel) and Richard Genée. The operetta was well received at its premiere, and was performed 69 times during its first run. Roles Synopsis :Place: The garrisoned Mediterranean city of Massa. :Time: First part of the 18th century It concerns a dispute between two states. The 'war' between them is played out as a game of love between Colonel Umberto Spinola, the commander-in-chief of the Genoese army, and the widowed Countess Violetta. Johann Strauss II
Johann Baptist Strauss II (25 October 1825 – 3 June 1899), also known as Johann Strauss Jr., the Younger or the Son (german: links=no, Sohn), was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as "The Waltz King", and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century. Paul Armin Edelmann (born 1968) is an Austrian operatic baritone. He received first musical training as a member of the Wiener Sängerknaben. After five years as an ensemble member at the Theater Koblenz, he has worked as a free-lance singer based in Vienna since 1997, appearing at major opera houses and festivals internationally, often together with his brother Peter Edelmann, also a baritone. Jörg Schneider (born 1969) is an Austrian operatic tenor. Life Born in Wels, Schneider received his first musical training with the Vienna Boys' Choir and studied in Vienna with Elfriede Obrowsky. In 1995 he became an ensemble member at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden. For the years 1997 to 2000 he moved as an ensemble member to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf. Eva Mei
Eva Mei (born 1967) is an Italian coloratura soprano. Mei was born in Fabriano. She graduated from the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini in Florence. In 1990, at the Mozart Competition in Vienna, she won the Catarina Cavalieri Prize for her interpretation of Konstanze in Mozart's ''Die Entführung aus dem Serail''. Ulf Schirmer (born 1959) is a German conductor and opera house administrator. Born in Eschenhausen, Lower Saxony, Schirmer studied at the Bremen Conservatory, and also at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, with György Ligeti, Christoph von Dohnányi and Horst Stein.
