Der Evangelimann
''Der Evangelimann'' (''The Evangelist'') is an opera in two acts by the Austrian composer Wilhelm Kienzl. The libretto, by the composer, is based on short story "". It was adapted in 1924 as a silent film '' The Evangelist''. Composition history Kienzl composed the opera in a relatively short space of time during 1894 in Graz and in the little Austrian town of Vöcklabruck. When he played extracts from the score to conductor Karl Muck and Count (then artistic director of the Berlin Opera), they immediately secured the rights to the premiere. The score was published by Bote & Bock Berlin, now part of Boosey & Hawkes. Performance history The opera was first performed at the on 4 May 1895. It was a triumphant success. Within only a few years most German and Austrian opera houses had the work in their repertory. Lothar Zagrosek
Lothar Zagrosek (born 13 November 1942 in Otting, Germany) is a German conductor. As a youth, he sang in the Regensburg Cathedral choir, including performances as the First Boy in ''The Magic Flute'' at the 1954 Salzburg Festival. From 1962 to 1967, Zagrosek studied conducting with Hans Swarowsky, István Kertész, Bruno Maderna and Herbert von Karajan. Zagrosek was chief conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1982 to 1986. He was principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1985 to 1988. Hermann Bachmann
Carl Hermann Bachmann (7 October 1864 – 5 July 1937) was a German operatic baritone, opera director and singing teacher. Life Born in Cottbus, Bachmann, who initially became a merchant, took singing lessons with Gustav Schmidt in Berlin. He made his debut as a singer in 1890 at the Stadttheater in Halle an der Saale, where he remained until 1894. From 1894 to 1897, he worked at the Nuremberg City Theatre. Julius Lieban
Julius Lieban (19 February 1857 – 1 February 1940) was an Austro-German operatic tenor. Life Lieban was born as the son of a hazzan in Břeclav and learned to play the violin from Roma in his youth. Later he attended the conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, studied singing with Josef Gänsbacher and came to the local theatre as a violinist. Afterwards he sang at the Stadttheater in Leipzig and at the Komische Oper in Vienna as opera buffa. In 1881 he took part in the Wagner tour of Angelo Neumann and later sang at the Bayreuth Festival.
