Deportivo Pereira is a professional Colombian football team based in Pereira, that currently plays in the Categoría Primera A. They play their home games at the Hernán Ramírez Villegas stadium. History Early years While there are several amateur teams from the Risaralda Department in the Third Division ( Primera C), Pereira is the department's only professional team. Deportivo Pereira was founded on 12 February 1944 by Pedro Patiño 'Peruco', Luis Carlos Marulanda, Rogelio Díaz 'Control', Faustino Chiquito y Gabriel Cardona Rojas, aiming to end the rivalry between the local clubs ''Deportivo Otún'' and ''Vidriocol''. César López Fretes
César López Fretes (21 March 1923 – 13 July 2001) was a football striker from Paraguay. López Fretes started his career at Atlántida Sport Club from Barrio Obrero and was later transferred to Olimpia Asunción. He was part of the Paraguay squad at the 1950 World Cup and was one of the goal scorers for Paraguay. He also played for Paraguay in the Copa América tournament. After retiring, he became a coach and managed several teams in Paraguay and Colombia, where he is remembered by Atlético Nacional fans for the championship he led the team to in 1973. Guillermo Berrío
Luis Guillermo Berrío Gómez (11 April 1968 – 11 April 2021) was a Colombian football player and coach. Playing career Born in Amagá, Berrío began his career in 1988, playing for Envigado, Atlético Huila, Deportivo Pereira and Deportes Quindío, and winning four promotions throughout his career. He also played in Peru for Unión Minas and Juan Aurich. He retired in 2004, whilst a Deportivo Pereira player. Rafael Arlex Castillo (born June 6, 1980) is a Colombian footballer who plays as a midfielder. He previously played for the former San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL and the Colombia national football team between 2001 and 2003. He is known for his tenacious style of play despite his diminutive stature. His past clubs include Real Cartagena (Colombia), Independiente Medellín (Colombia), Al-Ahly (Egypt) and Deportivo Pereira (Colombia). San Antonio Scorpions Castillo was a mid-season acquisition for the Scorpions. He was brought in between the Spring and Fall 2014 North American Soccer League seasons and immediately started. The 1996–97 Categoría Primera A season, known as Copa Mustang 1996–97 for sponsoring purposes, was the 50th season of the Categoría Primera A, Colombia's top-flight football league. The season started on 8 September 1996 and ended on 21 December 1997. Categoría Primera B, commonly referred to as Torneo BetPlay Dimayor due to sponsorship by online betting company BetPlay (formerly ''Torneo Águila''), is the second-division football league in Colombia. Format DIMAYOR has applied a new format from 2015 onwards because of the expansion to 20 teams in the Primera A tournament. The league will no longer have Apertura and Finalización seasons but rather a yearlong tournament with home and away games. The first phase of the tournament is everyone against everyone home and away games. The second is a two-groups phase with the 8 top teams from the season who play each other to determine the winners of each group. The winners of the two groups are both promoted to the Primera A and play the final in home and away games to determine the champion of the season.
