Department Of Health (Isle Of Man)
The Department of Health ( gv, Rheynn Slaynt) was a department of the Isle of Man Government. It was created on 1 April 2010, taking on the health services and public health functions of the former Department of Health and Social Security. On 1 August 2012 the Isle of Man's Mental Health Services were transferred from the Department of Social Care to the Department of Health, which also saw the creation of a post for a second Member for the Department with specific responsibility for Mental Health. On 2 December 2013 as part of the Council of Ministers' plans to modernize ministerial government it was announced that the Department of Health and the Department of Social Care (with the exception of Social Security, which would move to Treasury) would merge on 1 April, subject to the approval of Tynwald. The Department of Health and Social Security ( gv, Rheynn Slaynt as Shickyrys Y Theay) or DHSS provided healthcare (hospitals, doctors, dentistry, ambulance service), social services (mental health, social workers, and residential care), and social security (state pensions, child benefit, sickness benefit, and Jobseeker's Allowance). Prior to the separation of its component parts on 1 April 2010, the DHSS was the largest employer on the Isle of Man, with over 3,000 members of staff. The DHSS was largely replaced by two new Departments, the Department of Health and the Department of Social Care, with some Social Security functions transferring to the Isle of Man Treasury. Bernard May MHK (born 6 July 1941) is a British politician and entrepreneur, who was a Member of the House of Keys in the Isle of Man and Government Minister. Early life and career Born on 6 July 1941 to Harry Turner May and Lilian Freda (née Nicholl) in Hyde, Cheshire, he was raised on the Isle of Man and educated at Douglas High School. He later went on to own and operate a taxi company on the island and was also a member of Douglas Town Council before he was elected as a Member of the House of Keys for Douglas North in 1985 for the Manx Labour Party. He was re-elected in 1986 and 1991 before losing to John Houghton in 1996, following which he became a bus driver. In 1998, he unsuccessfully stood again. Leonard Singer
Leonard Ian Singer (27 January 1943 – 27 December 2023) was a British politician and pharmacist based in Ramsey, Isle of Man. Life and career Leonard Ian Singer was born in Manchester on 27 January 1943. He qualified as a pharmacist in 1966. He resided in Portugal and Tenerife. He moved to the Island in 1989 and set up Singers Pharmacy in Ramsey, Isle of Man. He was involved in local politics as a member of Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council from 1973 until 1986, and as a Ramsey Town Commissioner from 1991 to 1996. In 1996, he was elected as an MHK for Ramsey and in 2003 was elevated to the Legislative Council. In 2006, he resigned from the LegCo and stood in the general election for the House of Keys in Ramsey on the issue of restoring the 24-hour cover at Ramsey Cottage Hospital. Dudley Butt MLC (born 1946) was a Member of the Legislative Council and Tynwald in the Isle of Man. He is a former Detective Chief Inspector of the Isle of Man Constabulary. Robert "Bill" William Henderson MLC RMN (born 28 December 1961) is a Manx legislator who, after winning a 1998 by-election, represented the constituency of Douglas North in the House of Keys, the directly elected lower branch of Tynwald, the Isle of Man's parliament. In 2010, he was elected to the upper house, the Legislative Council; he was re-elected in 2015 and again in 2020. A native of the Isle of Man capital, Douglas, Henderson was educated at Ballakermeen and St Ninians High Schools, gained a Professional Diploma in Management from the Open University and followed a career in nursing before going into politics. Sir Henry Charles Kerruish Order of the British Empire, OBE Doctor of Laws, LLD Captain of the Parish, CP Legislative Council (Isle of Man), MLC (23 July 1917 – 2 August 2003) was a Manx people, Manx politician who was the first President of Tynwald and, as Speaker of the House of Keys from 1962 to 1990, was the longest-serving Speaker in any Parliament in the Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth. He was also the first Chairman of the Executive Council, the forerunner of the present Chief Minister of the Isle of Man, from 1961 to 1967. Arnold Callin
Alured Arnold Callin (25 August 1924 – 29 June 2015) was a Manx politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man. He was born in August 1924 and educated at Peel Clothworkers' School. He served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and then became a businessman and auctioneer on the Isle of Man. Between 1956 and 1976 he served on Onchan Commissioners, twice being chairman. In 1976 he was elected MHK for Middle. He was elevated to the legislative council in 1985 and served until standing down in 1995. He held many positions with government including minister of home affairs. James Anthony Brown OBE (born 5 January 1950) is a Manx politician, former businessman and electrician who was the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man from 2006 until October 2011, when he stepped down from office following his decision to retire. Early life and career Born on 5 January 1950, Brown was educated at Victoria Road Primary, Castletown and Castle Rushen High School and has since been an electrician, being the proprietor of Tony Brown Electrics in Castletown until its closure in 2010. He was elected as a member of Castletown Commissioners in 1976, becoming Chairman in 1980 before being elected as the Castletown MHK in 1981 at his first attempt.
