Denstone
Denstone is a village and civil parish situated between the towns of Uttoxeter in East Staffordshire and Ashbourne in Derbyshire. It is located next to the River Churnet. The All Saints village church, vicarage and school were built by Sir Thomas Percival Heywood, 2nd Baronet in the mid 19th century. Denstone College is situated to the west of the village. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Denstone had a railway station of its own which closed to passengers in 1965. Part of this railway line is now preserved as the Churnet Valley Railway. It is hoped that one day the line would extend back beyond the village station site via Oakamoor, but this is unlikely due to the large number of buildings near the railway. Denstone is a civil parish in the district of East Staffordshire, Staffordshire, England. It contains 30 buildings that are recorded in the National Heritage List for England. Of these, five are listed at Grade II*, the middle grade, and the others are at Grade II, the lowest grade. The parish contains the village of Denstone and the surrounding countryside. Most of the listed buildings are houses and associated structures, cottages, farmhouses and farm buildings. All Saints' Church, Denstone, All Saints Church in the village, designed by George Edmund Street, G. E. Street, is listed together with associated structures, also designed by Street. Denstone College
Denstone College is a mixed, independent, boarding and day school in Denstone, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, England. It is a Woodard School, having been founded by Nathaniel Woodard, and so Christian traditions are practised as part of College life. It is a member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference. History Nathaniel Woodard founded the school, originally called St Chad's College, as his flagship school in the Midlands, following earlier foundations in southern England. Work on the school began in 1868 and it opened in 1873 with 46 boys, under the direction of Edward Clarke Lowe, provost of the Midland district of the Woodard Corporation. The buildings were designed by William Slater and Richard Carpenter in the Neo-Gothic style. The school buildings, hall, chapel and war memorial are all Grade II listed. All Saints' Church, Denstone
All Saints' Church, Denstone is a Grade II* listed parish church in the Church of England in Denstone. History The church was built between 1860 and 1862 to designs of the architect George Edmund Street, funded by Sir Thomas Percival Heywood, 2nd Baronet. At the same time, Street also designed the lychgate, churchyard cross, vicarage and village school. Fittings The font on four marble columns is by Street, with carvings of four angels on each corner holding reversed jars to symbolise the four Rivers of Paradise by Thomas Earp. The pulpit, chandeliers and wrought-iron screen are also by Street. There is stained glass by Clayton and Bell. Organ The church has an organ which originally was built by Nicholson & Son in 1868 with the organ case by G. E. Street. A specification of the organ can be found on the National Pipe Organ Register. Sir Thomas Percival Heywood, 2nd Baronet
The Heywood Baronetcy, of Claremont in the County Palatine of Lancaster, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 9 August 1838 for the banker, politician and philanthropist Benjamin Heywood. He had been instrumental in the passage of the 1832 Reform Act. The second Baronet was High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1851. Churnet Valley Railway
The Churnet Valley Railway is a preserved standard gauge heritage railway in the Staffordshire Moorlands of Staffordshire, England. It operates on part of the former Churnet Valley Line.which was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway. The railway is roughly long from Kingsley and Froghall to Ipstones. The land from Leek Brook Junction to Ipstones was opened by Moorland & City Railways (MCR) in 2010 after they took a lease out from Network Rail. This has subsequently been purchased by the Churmet Valley Railway. The main stations along the line are Kingsley and Froghall, Consall, Cheddleton and Leek Brook (which is only used as a run around loop). Work has begun to extend the line to the town of Leek which will act as the northern terminus of the line. Uttoxeter
Uttoxeter ( , ) is a market town in the East Staffordshire district in the county of Staffordshire, England. It is near to the Derbyshire county border. It is situated from Burton upon Trent, from Stafford, from Stoke-on-Trent, from Derby and north-east of Rugeley. The population was 13,089 at the 2011 Census. The town's literary connections include Samuel Johnson and Mary Howitt. History Uttoxeter's name has been spelt at least 79 ways since it appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Wotocheshede": it probably came from Anglo-Saxon ''Wuttuceshǣddre'', meaning "Wuttuc's homestead on the heath". David Edwards (born 1947) is a Welsh physics teacher, best known as a TV quiz contestant. East Staffordshire is a local government district with borough status in Staffordshire in England. It has two main towns: Burton upon Trent and Uttoxeter. Villages in the area include Abbots Bromley, Stretton, Tutbury, Barton-under-Needwood, Rolleston on Dove, Hanbury, Kingstone, Marchington, Mayfield and The Heath. The district was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the former county borough of Burton upon Trent with the Urban District of Uttoxeter, and the Rural Districts of Tutbury and Uttoxeter.
