Denison Mine
Consolidated Denison Mine, or the Denison Mine is an abandoned uranium mine located approximately 12.5 km north of Elliot Lake, Ontario. The site is bordered north by Pronto Mine, Quirke Mine and Nordic Mine; on the east by Panel Mine and Can-Met Mine; and south by Spanish American Mine and Stanrock Mine. It is owned by Denison Mines Ltd. The site has been rehabilitated and its tailings facility is currently undergoing environmental monitoring by Denison Environmental Services. The site was the longest continuous operation in the area, from 1957 to 1992, during which time it produced 69 million tonnes of ore. History The site was discovered in 1953, by F. H. Jowsey, A. W. Stollery who sold his stake to Consolidated Denison Mines Limited in 1954. Geological surveys commenced in July 1954 followed by diamond drilling. Elliot Lake is a city in Algoma District, Ontario, Canada. It is north of Lake Huron, midway between the cities of Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie in the Northern Ontario region. Uranium is a chemical element with the symbol U and atomic number 92. It is a silvery-grey metal in the actinide series of the periodic table. A uranium atom has 92 protons and 92 electrons, of which 6 are valence electrons. Uranium production is carried out in about 13 countries around the world, in 2017 producing a cumulative total of 59,462 tonnes of uranium (tU). Uranium mining is the process of extraction of uranium ore from the ground. Over 50 thousand tons of uranium were produced in 2019. Kazakhstan, Canada, and Australia were the top three uranium producers, respectively, and together account for 68% of world production. The Buckles Mine is an historical uranium mine located approximately 4.5 km southeast of Elliot Lake, Ontario, owned and operated by Rio Algom Ltd. The site has been rehabilitated. Environmental monitoring is ongoing as part of the monitoring for the nearby Nordic Mine. History The mine was owned by Buckles Algoma Uranium Mines Limited, and was bought in 1955 by Spanish American Mines Limited in 1955. 1955 reserves were indicated to be 486,500 tons at 0.124% U308 in a 10 feet thick zone located 75 feet underground. Milliken Mine
The Milliken Mine is an abandoned uranium mine located approximately 2.5 km northeast of Elliot Lake, Ontario, owned and operated by Rio Algom Ltd. The site has been rehabilitated and its tailings facility is currently undergoing environmental monitoring by Denison Environmental Services as part of the monitoring of the Stanleigh Mine and tailings facility. The site was in operation from 1958 to 1964, during which time it produced 6.3 million tonnes of ore A company townsite existed on the west side of the Milliken Mine road, 1/2 km from the mine. Uranium trioxide (UO3), also called uranyl oxide, uranium(VI) oxide, and uranic oxide, is the hexavalent oxide of uranium. The solid may be obtained by heating uranyl nitrate to 400 °C.
