The Democratic Action Party was a political party in Malta. The Maltese Political Union ( it, Unione Politica Maltese, mt, Unjoni Politika Maltija) was a political party in Malta. History The party was established in 1920 by a merger of the Malta Political Association and the Patriotic Committee.Vincent E McHale (1983) ''Political parties of Europe'', Greenwood Press, p634 It emerged as the largest party in Parliament as a result of the 1921 elections, and its leader Joseph Howard became the country's first Prime Minister. Two of the most popular politicians within the party were Enrico Dandria and Ignazio Panzavecchia, both clerics representing the party in Parliament. The 1924 elections saw the party reduced to 10 seats, and it had to form a coalition with the Democratic Nationalist Party to stay in power. In 1926 the two parties merged to form the Nationalist Party. General elections were held in Malta between 25 and 27 October 1947.Dieter Nohlen & Philip Stöver (2010) ''Elections in Europe: A data handbook'', p1302 They were the first elections held under universal suffrage for women and Agatha Barbara became the first woman elected to Parliament. These elections saw the Labour Party win 24 of the 40 seats. Electoral system The elections were held using the single transferable vote system. Property qualifications for voters were abolished, and women were also allowed to vote for the first time.
