Delila is a rural unincorporated community in the southwest corner of Halifax County in the U.S. state of Virginia, located on / (Philpott Highway) at its intersection with SR 119 (Calvary Road) and SR 694 (Medley Road). Delila is 3 miles north of the North Carolina state line, 1 mile east of the Dan River, and roughly halfway between Danville and South Boston, Virginia. The nearest volunteer fire department to Delila is in Turbeville, approximately northeast of Delila. History The source of the town's name is obscure. Delila was among the tens of thousands of rural communities across the country given their own "fourth-class" post offices in the mid- to late 1800s; it was officially listed as a post village by 1877. Samuel S. Brandon, whose family owned the adjoining estate now called Brandon-on-the-Dan, was postmaster of Delila in the late 1800s, running the mail facility out of his store, a common practice at the time. Angelo Heilprin (March 31, 1853 – July 17, 1907) was an American geologist, paleontologist, naturalist, and explorer. He is mostly known for the part he took into the Peary expedition to Greenland of 1891–1892 and for his observations and photographs of the 1902 eruption of Montagne Pelée in Martinique. He also was a mountaineer and a painter. Biography Angelo Heilprin was born at Sátoraljaújhely, in the Zemplén County of the Kingdom of Hungary. His family was Jewish. Brandon Plantation is a historic plantation home located near Alton, Halifax County, Virginia. The main house is a two-part, frame vernacular farmhouse. The earliest section of the farmhouse is a single-pile, three-bay, gable-roof dwelling erected about 1800. Attached to the east end is a two-bay section added about 1842. The interior features details attributed to Thomas Day, a well-known African-American cabinetmaker from Milton, North Carolina. Brandon-on-the-Dan
Brandon-on-the-Dan is a historic estate at 1072 Calvary Road ( Virginia State Route 119), overlooking the Dan River in rural southwestern Halifax County, Virginia. The estate includes an early log house, and a c. 1855 Greek Revival wood-frame main house that received an extensive Craftsman-style alteration in 1915 by North Carolina African American master craftsman Thomas Day. The property also includes a large African American cemetery, and a log tobacco barn; the latter is distinctive as an example of modern log construction. The name Brandon-on-the-Dan was applied in relatively recent times, to avoid confusion with Brandon Plantation, which was owned by another branch of the same family.
