Brandon-on-the-Dan
Brandon-on-the-Dan is a historic estate at 1072 Calvary Road ( Virginia State Route 119), overlooking the Dan River in rural southwestern Halifax County, Virginia. The estate includes an early log house, and a c. 1855 Greek Revival wood-frame main house that received an extensive Craftsman-style alteration in 1915 by North Carolina African American master craftsman Thomas Day. The property also includes a large African American cemetery, and a log tobacco barn; the latter is distinctive as an example of modern log construction. The name Brandon-on-the-Dan was applied in relatively recent times, to avoid confusion with Brandon Plantation, which was owned by another branch of the same family. Brandon-on-the-Dan was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. It is also on the Virginia Department of Historic Resources list of historic African American sites in Virginia. Halifax County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 34,022. Its county seat is Halifax. History Occupied by varying cultures of indigenous peoples for thousands of years, in historic times English colonists encountered Siouan language Native Americans. Halifax County was established in 1752 by English colonists from Lunenburg County. The county was named for George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax. Virginia State Route 119
State Route 119 (SR 119) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Calvary Road, the state highway runs from the North Carolina state line, where the highway continues as North Carolina Highway 119 (NC 119), north to U.S. Route 58 (US 58)/US 360 at Delila. Route description SR 119 begins at the North Carolina state line in southwestern Halifax County. The highway continues south as NC 119 through the northeastern corner of Caswell County to Semora. SR 119 heads north as a two-lane undivided road through a mix of forest and farmland. The state highway passes Calvary Cemetery about halfway between the state line and the highway's northern terminus at US 58/US 360 (Philpott Road) at the hamlet of Delila between Danville and South Boston. Dan River
The Dan River flows in the U.S. states of North Carolina and Virginia. It rises in Patrick County, Virginia, and crosses the state border into Stokes County, North Carolina. It then flows into Rockingham County. From there it flows back into Virginia through Pittsylvania County before reentering North Carolina near the border between Caswell County and Rockingham County. It flows into northern Caswell County and then back into southern Virginia (briefly Pittsylvania County, then into Halifax County) and finally into Kerr Reservoir on the Roanoke River. The name of the river was first recorded by William Byrd II in 1728, during an expedition to survey the Virginia border, though Byrd did not explain the reason for the name. Brandon Plantation (Halifax County, Virginia)
Brandon Plantation is a historic plantation home located near Alton, Halifax County, Virginia. The main house is a two-part, frame vernacular farmhouse. The earliest section of the farmhouse is a single-pile, three-bay, gable-roof dwelling erected about 1800. Attached to the east end is a two-bay section added about 1842. The interior features details attributed to Thomas Day, a well-known African-American cabinetmaker from Milton, North Carolina. The farmhouse underwent an extensive remodeling and modernization in the early 1960s but preserves a significant degree of architectural integrity.
