Del Norte High School (Crescent City, California)
Del Norte High School or DNHS, located in Crescent City, California, is a public high school educating students from grades 9 through 12. It is the only regular public high school in Del Norte County. In 2008 DNHS was accredited for six years (through 2014) by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The current principal, as of 2021, is Alison Eckart, and the dean of students/athletic director is Robert Hadfield. In popular culture, Del Norte High School is the school attended by Laurel Sewell and her friends in the best-selling young adult novel, Wings. Del Norte High School also became sister schools with another school in Rikuzentakata-shi, Iwate, Japan. Del Norte High School obtained an art club and cosplay club in 2018 of the new school year. Del Norte High takes turns with Takata high school each year of traveling their students to Japan one year and Takata's students the next year. Del Norte High School is a public high school located in and primarily serving the 4S Ranch and Del Sur communities of San Diego, California. It is part of the Poway Unified School District (PUSD). Established in 2009, the campus covers of land. History Del Norte opened on August 19, 2009, and was the last comprehensive high school to be opened in the Poway Unified School District. During its first year, Del Norte was expected to have approximately 700 students in order to create a personalized learning experience. Also notable was the absence of juniors and seniors, as the first year only contained freshmen and sophomores. The expected student population after the first few years was approximately 2,250 students. On May 13, 2014, the Bernardo Fire broke out near the school, leading to the evacuation of 21,000 nearby houses. Del Norte is a List of municipalities in Colorado#Statutory town, Statutory Town that is the county seat of Rio Grande County, Colorado, Rio Grande County, Colorado, United States. The town's name is most commonly pronounced /ˈdɛl nɔɹt/. The town population was 1,458 at the 2020 United States Census. History Del Norte is named from the river Rio Grande del Norte, or "large river of the north". There is abundant evidence in the area in the form of arrowheads and campsites of ancient peoples living around Del Norte thousands of years ago, such as the Folsom people. Afterwards, the Ute people, Utes were known to live around Del Norte and the rest of the San Luis Valley, going back hundreds of years prior to Euro-American contact.
