Del Norte High School (Crescent City, California)
Del Norte High School or DNHS, located in Crescent City, California, is a public high school educating students from grades 9 through 12. It is the only regular public high school in Del Norte County. In 2008 DNHS was accredited for six years (through 2014) by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The current principal, as of 2021, is Alison Eckart, and the dean of students/athletic director is Robert Hadfield. In popular culture, Del Norte High School is the school attended by Laurel Sewell and her friends in the best-selling young adult novel, Wings. Del Norte High School also became sister schools with another school in Rikuzentakata-shi, Iwate, Japan. Del Norte High School obtained an art club and cosplay club in 2018 of the new school year. Crescent City, California
Crescent City (Tolowa: ''Taa-’at-dvn''; Yurok: ''Kohpey''; Wiyot: ''Daluwagh'') is the only incorporated city in Del Norte County, California; it is also the county seat. Named for the crescent-shaped stretch of sandy beach south of the city, Crescent City had a total population of 6,673 in the 2020 census, down from 7,643 in the 2010 census. The population includes inmates at Pelican Bay State Prison, also within the city limits, and the former census-designated place Crescent City North annexed to the city. The city is also the site of the Redwood National Park headquarters, as well as the historic Battery Point Light. Eunice Bommelyn
Eunice Xash-wee-tes-na Henry Bommelyn (February 6, 1927 – April 23, 2012) was an American Tolowa cultural advocate, Tolowa language proponent, and tribal historian. Bommelyn was the last living person to speak Tolowa as a native first language; Bommelyn led the effort to revive fluency and teach the language. She uncovered and recorded the genealogy of the Tolowa from the present to the 1790s. Her genealogical records are used to determine the membership and enrollment of the Smith River Rancheria, the federally recognized tribe of Tolowa people in Del Norte County, California. Bommelyn was the mother of Loren Bommelyn, a ceremonial leader and basket weaver. Cody Taylor Hoffman (born March 13, 1991) is a former American football wide receiver. He signed as an un-drafted free agent with the Washington Redskins in 2014. He played college football at BYU. Following the 2012 season, he was recognized as an All-American honorable mention. Buck James Pierce (born November 15, 1981) is the offensive coordinator of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and a retired professional quarterback who played nine seasons for the BC Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. The ''Del Norte Triplicate'' is an American paid newspaper which serves the city of Crescent City and surrounding Del Norte county. It is published weekly on Fridays. The Tolowa people or Taa-laa-wa Dee-ni’ are a Native American people of the Athabaskan-speaking ethno-linguistic group. Tolowa Language
The Tolowa language (also called Chetco-Tolowa, or Siletz Dee-ni) is a member of the Pacific Coast subgroup of the Athabaskan language family. Together with three other closely related languages (Lower Rogue River Athabaskan, Upper Rogue River Athabaskan or Galice-Applegate and Upper Umpqua or Etnemitane) it forms a distinctive Oregon Athabaskan cluster within the subgroup. Yurok Language
Yurok (also Chillula, Mita, Pekwan, Rikwa, Sugon, Weitspek, Weitspekan) is an Algic language. It is the traditional language of the Yurok people of Del Norte County and Humboldt County on the far north coast of California, most of whom now speak English. The last native speaker died in 2013.
