Deeside Ice Arena
Deeside ( cy, Glannau Dyfrdwy) is the name given to a predominantly industrial conurbation of towns and villages in Flintshire and Cheshire on the Wales–England border lying near the canalised stretch of the River Dee that flows from neighbouring Chester into the Dee Estuary. These include Connah's Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, Aston, Garden City, Sealand, Broughton, Bretton, Hawarden, Ewloe, Mancot, Pentre, Saltney and Sandycroft. The population is around 50,000, with a plurality (17,500) living in Connah's Quay. Deeside is known for its industry, providing jobs for the people of Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales. Dee Estuary
The Dee Estuary ( cy, Aber Dyfrdwy) is a large estuary by means of which the River Dee flows into Liverpool Bay. The estuary starts near Shotton after a five-mile (8 km) 'canalised' section and the river soon swells to be several miles wide forming the boundary between the Wirral Peninsula in north-west England and Flintshire in north-east Wales. The Dee Estuary's largest towns along it include Hollywell, Flint, Connah's Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, Saltney Ferry, Chester (City), Heswall, West Kirby and Neston as well as other villages and towns alongside it. The A548 also passes along the estuary in Wales and parts of Cheshire West and Chester and Merseyside in England. Queensferry, Flintshire
Queensferry ( cy, Fferi Buddug / Fferi Isaf) is a town, community and electoral ward in Flintshire, Wales, lying on the River Dee near the border. The community includes the village of Sandycroft. It is between Connah's Quay, Shotton and Saltney Ferry. Queensferry is also part of the wider Deeside conurbation. Description Its name derives from the ferries that crossed the River Dee. The settlement of Higher Ferry ( cy, Y Fferi Uchaf) is now known as Saltney, while Queensferry was named Lower Ferry ( cy, Y Fferi Isaf). Sandycroft
Sandycroft is a village in Flintshire, Wales, approximately southeast of Queensferry and southwest of Chester, on the B5129 road between Queensferry and Broughton. The community population taken at the 2011 census was 6,724. Railway station Sandycroft railway station was opened in 1884, and was served by the North Wales Coast Line for 77 years until its closure under the Beeching Axe in 1961. Mancot
Mancot is a village in Flintshire, Wales, approximately 1 mile from Queensferry, and Hawarden and 6 miles from Chester. According to the 2001 Census, Mancot had a population of 3,462. In 1849 the population of the village was 282. Following reorganisation the population of Mancot was listed under Hawarden. The electoral ward remains giving a population taken at the 2011 Census of 3,496. The placename Mancot is believed to mean 'humble dwelling', with the earliest recorded reference to the village being in the late 13th century. Although now considered a village in its own right, Mancot was originally divided into three small hamlets consisting of Little Mancot, Big Mancot and Mancot Royal. Ewloe
Ewloe (; cy, Ewlo, ) is a village and electoral ward in the community of Hawarden in Flintshire, Wales. It is situated close to the Flintshire/Cheshire sector of the Wales-England border. The A55 expressway passes through Ewloe and its most notable landmark is Ewloe Castle. The Ewloe electoral ward had a population at the 2011 Census of 5,420. The urban area of the village is contiguous with Hawarden, Buckley and Shotton. The Office for National Statistics deems Ewloe to form part of the Buckley built-up area, which covers much of Deeside. Economy Ewloe grew rapidly during the late 1990s and early 2000s and is now the home of the internet based Moneysupermarket.com and construction company Redrow. Broughton, Flintshire
Broughton ( cy, Brychdyn) is a large village in Flintshire, Wales, close to the Wales–England border, located to the west of the city of Chester, England, in the community of Broughton and Bretton. Along with the nearby village of Bretton, the total population was 5,791 at the 2001 Census, increasing to 5,974 at the 2011 Census. Broughton is home to a large aircraft factory at Hawarden Airport. This was completed in 1939 for use by Vickers-Armstrongs, who built 5,786 Wellington bombers. De Havilland Aircraft took over the factory in 1948 and built 2,816 planes of several designs. Today, the plant is an Airbus factory that manufactures wings for the A320, A330 and A350 aircraft.
