De Soto, Kansas
De Soto is a city in Johnson and Leavenworth counties in the U.S. state of Kansas, and part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 6,118. History The land that would become De Soto was part of a large territory extending to present-day St. Louis that was occupied by the Osage people, who were relocated from east of the Mississippi River in the upper Midwest. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) is the organization which oversees interscholastic competition in the U.S. state of Kansas at the high school, high-school level. It oversees both athletic and non-athletic competition, and sponsors championships in several sports and activities. History The Kansas State High School Activities Association was formed in 1937 and incorporated in 1956. As early as 1910, Kansas schools organized the statewide Debate League and Athletic Association governed by high school principals. The Athletic Association started as a small voluntary group of fewer than 50 schools and grew to more than 500 schools by the 1920s. Mill Valley High School is a high school located in Shawnee, Kansas, and operated by De Soto USD 232 public school district. As of the 2020–2021 school year, its attendance is roughly 1,306. Mill Valley is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association and offers a variety of sports programs. Athletic teams compete in the 5A division and are known as the "Jaguars". Extracurricular activities are also offered in the form of performing arts, school publications, and clubs. History The school began classes in 2000–01. De Soto High School is a public secondary school in De Soto, Kansas operated by De Soto USD 232 public school district, and serves students of grades 9 to 12. The school is located near highway K-10 and Lexington Avenue on 91st Street. Around 900 students in grades 9–12 attend DHS. History The school first opened in 1919 as a small white wooden school in De Soto. Then the high school was moved to the present day City Hall and after the destruction of the original school the lower grades were moved to a building where district offices are today nearby the City Hall. The high school was then expanded to include the present day community center which has one of the oldest sunken gyms still in use in the Midwest. After the school experienced overcrowding, the present day middle school was built as the then high school building. The middle school was then moved to the City hall. Olathe ( ) is the county seat of Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is the fourth-most populous city in both the Kansas City metropolitan area and the state of Kansas, with a 2020 population of 141,290. History 19th century Olathe was founded by John T. Barton in the spring of 1857. He rode to the center of Johnson County, and staked two quarter sections of land as the town site.
