De Soto High School (Kansas)
De Soto High School is a public secondary school in De Soto, Kansas operated by De Soto USD 232 public school district, and serves students of grades 9 to 12. The school is located near highway K-10 and Lexington Avenue on 91st Street. Around 900 students in grades 9–12 attend DHS. History The school first opened in 1919 as a small white wooden school in De Soto. Then the high school was moved to the present day City Hall and after the destruction of the original school the lower grades were moved to a building where district offices are today nearby the City Hall. The high school was then expanded to include the present day community center which has one of the oldest sunken gyms still in use in the Midwest. After the school experienced overcrowding, the present day middle school was built as the then high school building. The middle school was then moved to the City hall. De Soto is a city in Johnson and Leavenworth counties in the U.S. state of Kansas, and part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 6,118. K-10 (Kansas Highway)
K-10 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Kansas. It was originally designated in 1929. It is mostly a controlled-access freeway, linking Lawrence to Lenexa. It provides an important toll-free alternate route to Interstate 70 (the Kansas Turnpike). Several scenes for the TV-movie ''The Day After'' were filmed on the highway at De Soto in 1982 portraying a mass exodus evacuating the Kansas City area on I-70. Route description The highway's western end begins as a two-lane highway (a super-two at I-70 exit 197, just west of Lawrence. It bypasses the city to the south, providing access to Clinton Lake, and also intersects with U.S. Route 59, beginning a four lane freeway after the interchange. Mill Valley High School is a high school located in Shawnee, Kansas, and operated by De Soto USD 232 public school district. As of the 2020–2021 school year, its attendance is roughly 1,306. Mill Valley is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association and offers a variety of sports programs. Athletic teams compete in the 5A division and are known as the "Jaguars".
