De (surname)
De or Dey is a surname commonly used by the Bengali community. De/Dey is derived from the last name Deb/Dev or Deva. The surname has been associated with Bengali Kayastha, Gandhabanik, Teli, Suvarna Banik, and some other communities. In 12th–13th century, a Hindu dynasty Deva ruled over eastern Bengal after the Sena dynasty. The capital of this dynasty was Bikrampur in present-day Munshiganj district of Bangladesh. This Hindu Vaishnava dynasty is different from an earlier Buddhist Deva dynasty (c. 8th–9th century) of Samatata, whose capital was Devaparvata. Sambhu Nath De
Sambhunath De ; (1 February 1915 – 15 April 1985) was an Indian medical scientist and researcher, who discovered the cholera toxin, the ''animal model of cholera'', and successfully demonstrated the method of transmission of cholera pathogen ''Vibrio cholerae''. Early career Shambhu Nath De was born in Hooghly District, West Bengal, India. His father Mr Dasarathi De was a not so successful businessman. Krishna Chandra Dey
Krishna Chandra Dey (24 August 1893 – 28 November 1962), better known as K.C. Dey, was an Indian music director, music composer, musician, singer, actor, and music teacher born in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He was S.D. Burman's first musical teacher and mentor. His father's name was Shibchandra Dey. In 1906, at the age of fourteen, he lost his eyesight and became completely blind. He worked for various theatre groups and finally went on to work for New Theatres in Kolkata until 1940. He is best remembered for his Kirtan songs. He was patronized by many elite families of Calcutta at that time. He often sang in jalsa of Rajbari of Sovabazar, Mitra House of Beadon Street and many others. K.C. Lal Behari Dey
Reverend Lal Behari Day (also Dey, 18 December 1824 – 28 October 1892) was an Indian writer and journalist, who converted to Christianity, and became a Christian missionary himself. Biography Lal Behari Dey was born on 18 December 1824 to a Bengali Suvarna Banik caste family at Sonapalasi near Bardhaman. His father Radhakanta Dey Mondal was a small bill broker in Kolkata. After primary education in the village school he came to Calcutta with his father and was admitted to Reverend Alexander Duff's General Assembly Institution, where he studied from 1834 to 1844. Ramdulal Sarkar
Ramdulal Sarkar (also spelt Ramdulal Dey or Ramdulal Deb) (1752 – 1825) was a Bengali merchant and a foremost name in the Indo-American maritime trade during the 18th and early 19th century. Life Sarkar was born in 1752 to Balaram Sarkar in the village of Rekjani near Dum Dum, West Bengal (then Company rule in India) while his parents were on the run during the Mahratta invasion of 1751–1752. Sarkar became an orphan soon after, and maternal grandfather, Ramsundar Biswas, brought him to Calcutta. His maternal grandmother found work as a cook in the house of the wealthy merchant, Madanmohan Dutta, the Dewan of Export Warehouses. Rani Chanda
Rani Chanda (née Dey) (1912 – 19 June 1997) was an Indian artist and writer. Early life Rani Chanda was one of five children of Purnashashi Devi and Kula Chandra Dey. Her father was a dear friend of Rabindranath Tagore. She was trained in music, dance and arts at Visva Bharati and was a regular member of Rabindranath's dance drama recitals. Mukul Dey, Mukul Chandra Dey, a pioneer of drypoint-etching in India, was her elder brother. Works and later life Rabindranath Tagore first advised Rani Chanda to write.
