Dayton Flyers
The Dayton Flyers are the intercollegiate athletic teams of the University of Dayton of Dayton, Ohio. All Flyers intercollegiate sports teams participate at the NCAA Division I level. The football team competes in the Division I FCS non-scholarship Pioneer Football League, and women's golf plays in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, while all other sports compete in the non-football Atlantic 10 Conference. The Flyers name The name is a reference and homage to Daytonians Orville and Wilbur Wright who pioneered heavier than air flight. Orville and Wilbur Wright designed the Wright Flyer I and fabricated many of its components, including the propellers and engine, at their bicycle shop in Dayton. The Wright Flyer I was the first powered aircraft to achieve sustained, controlled flight. Atlantic 10 Conference
The Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) is a collegiate athletic conference whose schools compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I. The A-10's member schools are located in states mostly on the United States Eastern Seaboard, as well as some in the Midwest: Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, and Missouri as well as in the District of Columbia. Although some of its members are state-funded, half of its membership is made up of private, Catholic institutions. Despite the name, there are 15 full-time members, and four affiliate members that participate in women's field hockey and men's lacrosse. Dayton Flyers Women's Basketball
The Dayton Flyers women's basketball team is the NCAA Division 1 basketball team that represents University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. The school's team currently competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference. They are currently coached by Tamika Williams-Jeter. The Flyers play their home games at University of Dayton Arena where the official capacity for basketball games is 13,435. History The University of Dayton first sponsored women's basketball in 1968 playing in the NCAA's Division II until 1984. During their tenure in Division II the team won the AIAW National Championship in 1980, was the national runner-up in 1979, as well as winning the 1982 AIAW Midwest Regional Championship, advancing to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1984, and winning the OAISW State Championship in 1977. The team then joined the North Star conference in 1984 until moving to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1988 to 1993. Salad Bowl (American Football)
The Salad Bowl was an annual post-season American college football bowl game played at Montgomery Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona, from 1947 to 1955. The bowl was sponsored by the Phoenix and Valley of the Sun Kiwanis Clubs. The bowl stopped inviting college teams in 1952; the 1953 and 1954 games were played among service teams. Blackburn/McCafferty Trophy
The Blackburn/McCafferty Trophy is the award given to the winner of regular season basketball games between the University of Dayton and Xavier University. Origin of Competition The first meeting between the two Catholic universities was a 24-18 victory by Dayton on February 20, 1920. The two schools have maintained an annual meeting since then, frequently meeting twice in one season. The series has been interrupted four times, most recently from 1943-45 due to World War II. Xavier held a commanding early lead in the series until Dayton won 61 of the next 74 games beginning in 1950. The rivalry between the two schools took on added significance beginning in the 1988-89 season when Dayton joined Xavier in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now the Horizon League) and again in the 1995-96 season when Dayton and Xavier joined the Atlantic 10 Conference. The NCAA Division I Football Championship is an annual post-season college football game, played since 2006, used to determine a national champion of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). From 1978 to 2005, the game was known as the NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship. The game serves as the final match of an annual postseason bracket tournament between top teams in FCS.
