Daxi Wood Art Ecomuseum
The Daxi Wood Art Ecomuseum () is a museum complex in Daxi District, Taoyuan City, Taiwan. The idea of ecomuseum is based on Scandinavian concept which emphasizes the integration between local communities and the preservation of cultural assets. History The establishment of this museum started with the renovation of building in the area and incorporated them with the local old streets which was initiated in 1996. The first museum building opened to the public is the Number One Hall, a Japanese-style house constructed in the 1920s. It was also the residence for the principle of Daxi Elementary School. The previous owner of the house, Mr. Mao-Lin Chen and his wife Mrs. Cui-Wu Chen-Wang used to teach tailoring classes at the house. The banner hung high up above the front door that reads "Xiguang Tailoring Class" brings back many memories for the women of Daxi. Daxi District
Daxi District (), formerly known as Daxi Township (), is a district in eastern Taoyuan City, Taiwan. In March 2012, it was named one of the ''Top 10 Small Tourist Towns'' by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan. History The Daxi area was occupied for several thousand years by the Atayal people. The Atayal called the local river (modern-day Dahan Creek) ''Takoham'' in their native Austronesian language. This gave rise to similar names such as ''Toa-kho-ham'' (; also ) in Hokkien and ''Taikokan'' in Japanese via transliteration. Eighteenth-century Han settlement in the Taipei Basin led many Atayal families to relocate upriver, though some Atayal stayed and mingled with the newcomers. The settlement later became an important trading post in the 19th century. In 1803, open fighting broke out between two rival factions of Han settlers in Taipei, and many refugees fled south for safety. Taoyuan () is a special municipality of the Republic of China (Taiwan) located in northwestern Taiwan, neighboring New Taipei City to the north-east, Yilan County to the south-east, and Hsinchu County to the south-west. Ecomuseum
An ecomuseum is a museum focused on the identity of a place, largely based on local participation and aiming to enhance the welfare and development of local community, local communities. Ecomuseums originated in France, the concept being developed by Georges Henri Rivière and :fr:Hugues de Varine, Hugues de Varine, who coined the term ‘ecomusée’ in 1971. The term "éco" is a shortened form for "écologie", but it refers especially to a new idea of holistic interpretation of cultural heritage, in opposition to the focus on specific items and objects, performed by traditional museums. Daxi Wude Hall
The Daxi Wude Hall () is a former martial arts training center in Daxi District, Taoyuan City, Taiwan. The hall is part of Daxi Wood Art Ecomuseum. History The building was completed in February 1935 during the Japanese rule of Taiwan which also included a convention center. However, due to the earthquake in April of the same year, the opening of the building was held on 20 May 1935. It was used as the martial arts training center for the police of the Japanese government. In 1950, the convention center was changed to the Presidential Residence. Military Police Corps was also established for the security and defense needs for the hall. When the military police moved to Touliao Mausoleum in 1998, the army turned over the architecture and the land of Wude Hall to Daxi Township Administration Office.
