Dawson's Book Shop
Dawson's Book Shop was a bookstore and small press that operated in Los Angeles beginning in 1905. Founded by Ernest Dawson (d. 1947), it was started as a new bookstore, but Dawson soon shifted his attention to rare books, and was known from that time on as a rare book dealer. The business was taken over after his death by his sons Glen Dawson and Muir Dawson. Dawson's specialized in rare books related to California and the West. Today, the shop operates online under the ownership of Michael Dawson. Ernest Dawson
Ernest Dawson (1 December 1882, in San Antonio, Texas – 15 November 1947, in Los Angeles) was an American antiquarian bookseller, small press publisher, mountain climber, and Sierra Club president. Ernest Dawson, born in Texas, moved in 1885 with his parents and siblings to San Luis Obispo, California. In 1905 he founded Dawson's Book Shop, a bookstore located at 713 South Broadway in Los Angeles. In 1909 he married Sadie Alena Roberts (1883–1967). In 1912, Dawson's Book Shop published a catalogue (No. 15) with 211 titles. He sold the business in 1912 but repurchased it in 1917. In 1922 he moved the store to 627 South Grand Avenue in Los Angeles. In the 1930s his sons Glen (1912–2016) and Muir (1921–2005) began helping in the business. In the early 1940s the Press for Dawson's Book Shop published print runs of several books. When he died in 1947, his sons Glen and Muir took over the business. Glen Dawson (mountaineer)
Glen Dawson (June 3, 1912 – March 22, 2016) was an American rock climber, mountaineer, antiquarian bookseller, publisher and environmentalist. Early life His father, Ernest Dawson (1882–1947), was also a climber, antiquarian bookseller, and Sierra Club leader, who served as Sierra Club president from 1934 - 1937. Glen climbed White Mountain Peak in 1927. In 1928, Glen and his father climbed the Matterhorn with two Swiss guides. Climbing career 1929–1930 In 1929, Dawson began serious mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada. With John Nixon and experienced climber Bill Horsfall, he climbed Mount Abbot, Mount Mills, Mount Hooper, Mount Humphreys, and the (later named) Clyde Minaret. A miniature book is a very small book. Standards for what may be termed a miniature rather than just a small book have changed through time. Today, most collectors consider a book to be miniature only if it is 3 inches or smaller in height, width, and thickness, particularly in the United States.
