''Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II'' is a real-time strategy- tactical role-playing video game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ for Microsoft Windows based on the fictional ''Warhammer 40,000'' universe. It is the sequel to the '' Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War'' video game series. ''Dawn of War II'' was released in North America on February 19, 2009 and in Europe on February 20, 2009. A sequel, '' Dawn of War III'', was released in April 2017. Gameplay Playable armies at the initial release of the game include the Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, and Tyranids. The Chaos Space Marines and the Imperial Guard were later added to the game through its two expansion packs. The gameplay of ''Dawn of War II'' is markedly different from that of ''Dawn of War'' and its expansions. Building bases is completely removed. ''Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III'' is a 2017 real-time strategy game with multiplayer online battle arena influences, developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sega. It is the third stand-alone title in the ''Dawn of War'' series, and the first new release in the series since '' Dawn of War II: Retribution'' in 2011. It was released for Microsoft Windows on April 27, 2017. Feral Interactive released macOS and Linux versions on June 8 the same year. Linux version uses both the OpenGL and Vulkan graphics APIs, while the macOS port uses Apple's Metal. Gameplay The initial factions available for play are the Space Marines of the Imperium of Man, the Eldar and the Orks (all of whom have appeared in the earlier games of the series). Eldar (Warhammer 40,000)
In the fictional setting of '' Warhammer 40,000'', the Aeldari (or the Eldar) are a race of aliens and playable army in the tabletop miniatures wargame. They are patterned after the High Elves of fantasy fiction; long-lived, arrogant, and possessing great psychic powers. The Eldar once ruled the galaxy but were devastated in a supernatural cataclysm. The Eldar are divided into factions: Craftworld Eldar, Harlequins, Exodites, Corsairs, The Ynnari and Drukhari or Dark Eldar.
