Dawn Of America
''Dawn of America'' (Spanish: ''Alba de América'') is a 1951 Spanish historical adventure film directed by Juan de Orduña and starring Antonio Vilar, María Martín and José Suárez. The film depicts the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus in the late fifteenth century. Production The film was made by the largest Spanish studio CIFESA. The production was conceived as a response to the 1949 British film ''Christopher Columbus''. The British film had attempted a realist depiction of Columbus (portraying him as only partly successful, and his achievements being in spite of the Spanish monarchy). The Spanish response portrayed Columbus as a single-minded adventurer whose discovery led to the greater glory of the Spanish monarchy and the Catholic Church. Juan de Orduña y Fernández-Shaw (27 December 1900 – 3 February 1974) was a Spanish film director, screenwriter and actor. Subservient to the ideological tenets and preferences of Francoism, he was one of the regime's standout directors during the autarchy period. He particularly earned recognition for his epic-historicist films, including the extravagant ''Madness for Love'' (1948), "an immense commercial success". Eduardo Martínez Fajardo (14 August 1924 – 4 July 2019) was a Spanish film actor born in Meis (Pontevedra), Spain. He appeared in 183 films, 75 plays and made 2,000 television appearances between 1947 and 2002. Biography He was born in Meis, Pontevedra on 14 August 1924, and he raised in Haro and Santander, where he studied Bachillerato. He began his career as a voice actor from 1942 to 1946, and in 1947 he made his film debut in ''Héroes del 95'', directed by Raúl Alfonso. In the 1950s he moved to Mexico, and when he came back to Spain he appeared in spaghetti westerns such as ''Gli eroi di Fort Worth'' (1965) by Martin Herbert, and '' Django'' (1966) by Sergio Corbucci. ''Furrows'' ( es, Surcos) is a 1951 Spanish film directed by José Antonio Nieves Conde, and written by him in collaboration with Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, Eugenio Montes, and Natividad Zaro. It provides an unsettling portrait of post-Civil War Madrid while caudillo Francisco Franco was in power. Plot ''Surcos'' follows the struggles of a Spanish family as it emigrates from the countryside to Madrid circa 1950. Facing difficulties in finding housing and employment, several family members turn to illegal or immoral activities in order to make ends meet, and the traditional family structure disintegrates.
