David Torrance (banker)
David Torrance (1805 – January 29, 1876) was a Canadian merchant, shipper, and president of the Bank of Montreal. Early life Torrance was born in 1805 in New York City, the son of James Torrance. His father was one of five Torrance brothers who emigrated to Canada from Lanarkshire, Scotland, early in the 19th century. His uncles, Thomas Torrance (1776–1826) and John Torrance (1786–1870), settled at Montreal as wholesale and retail grocers and winesellers. His father James went to Kingston, Upper Canada, as agent for the family. Career Around 1821, Torrance came to Montreal to work for his uncle at John Torrance and Co. In 1833, Torrance became a partner in the business of his uncle (and father-in-law), John Torrance and Co. When his John retired in 1853, the firm became David Torrance and Co., with Thomas Cramp and later his own son, John Torrance (1835–1908) as partners. David Torrance (judge)
David Torrance (March 3, 1840 – September 5, 1906) was a soldier, lawyer, politician, and chief justice of the Supreme Court in Connecticut. Torrance was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on March 3, 1840. Torrance's widowed mother emigrated to the United States in 1849 with her five children, settling in Norwich, Connecticut. Torrance worked in cotton and paper mills to support his family, receiving little formal education. In 1862 he enlisted in the Union army as a private, but he rapidly rose in rank. He was captured at the Second Battle of Winchester and spent time in Libby Prison, but was soon paroled. In January 1864 he was commissioned a captain in the 29th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops, commanded by William B. Wooster, a lawyer in New Haven. By the end of the war Torrance was lieutenant colonel under Wooster. Torrance began to study law under Wooster during the war, and moved to Derby after the war to study law with him. Tiberias
Tiberias ( ; he, טְבֶרְיָה, ; ar, طبريا, Ṭabariyyā) is an Israeli city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. A major Jewish center during Late Antiquity, it has been considered since the 16th century one of Judaism's Four Holy Cities, along with Jerusalem, Hebron, and Safed. In , it had a population of . David Herd Torrance (born 13 March 1961) is a Scottish National Party (SNP) politician. He has been the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Kirkcaldy constituency since 2011. Background Born in Kirkcaldy, David Torrance was educated at Balwearie High School and Adam Smith College, where he gained an HND Mechanical Engineering. Torrance is a member of the Scout Association, and has been Scout Leader since 1979. He is also the Assistant District Commissioner for Kirkcaldy District Scouts. David Torrance (born 7 August 1977 in Edinburgh, Scotland) is a British political journalist, author and contemporary historian. Torrance is best known for his unauthorised biography of Alex Salmond and his political commentary for STV (TV channel), STV and BBC. Life and career Torrance was brought up in Edinburgh, Scotland where he attended Leith Academy. He matriculated to the University of Aberdeen receiving a degree in psychology and went on to study journalism at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism. Torrance began his career as a reporter for the ''Edinburgh Evening News'' from 2000 to 2001. He soon moved into television to present and produce ''The Week in Politics'' for Grampian Television, Grampian. Torrance stayed on as the Scottish Parliamentary reporter when the programme was taken over by Scottish Television (STV) and retitled ''Politics Now'' in 2004.
