David Partridge (artist)
David Gerry Partridge, (5 October 1919 – 11 December 2006) was a Canadian painter, etcher, sculptor, educator and past President of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He was best known for creating works made of nails driven into plywood to different heights forming representational or abstract sculptures which became known as "Nailies". Early life and education Partridge was born to Albert Partridge and Edith Harpham in Akron, Ohio, the youngest of three children. From 1928 to 1935 he lived in England where he attended Mostyn House School in Cheshire and later, Radley College in Oxfordshire. At the age of sixteen Partridge moved to Canada with his family. He attended Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario between 1935 and 1938 before studying history, geology and English at Hart House, University of Toronto from 1938 to 1941, under Cavan Atkins. Will Ogilvie (painter)
William Abernethy Ogilvie, (March 3, 1901 – August 28, 1989) was a Canadian painter and war artist. Early life Ogilvie came to Canada in 1925 and after living in Toronto, went to New York from 1925–1930 to study at the Art Students League with Kimon Nicolaïdes, the author later of an important text on drawing, ''The Natural Way to Draw'' (1941). He worked briefly in New York as a commercial artist before returning to Toronto and joining Charles Comfort and Harold Ayres in a company which offered diverse skills, part advertising, part magazine illustration. In 1933, he was one of the founders of the Canadian Group of Painters and from 1933–1989, he was also a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. National Gallery Of Canada
The National Gallery of Canada (french: Musée des beaux-arts du Canada), located in the capital city of Ottawa, Ontario, is Canada's national art museum. The museum's building takes up , with of space used for exhibiting art. It is one of the largest art museums in North America by exhibition space. The institution was established in 1880 at the Second Supreme Court of Canada building, and moved to the Victoria Memorial Museum building in 1911. In 1913, the Government of Canada passed the ''National Gallery Act'', formally outlining the institution's mandate as a national art museum. The museum was moved to the Lorne building in 1960. In 1988, the museum was relocated to a new building designed for this purpose. The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) is a Canadian arts-related organization that was founded in 1880. History 1880 to 1890 The title of Royal Canadian Academy of Arts was received from Queen Victoria on 16 July 1880. The Governor General of Canada, the Marquess of Lorne, was its first patron. The painter Lucius O’Brien was its first President. Atelier 17
Atelier 17 was an art school and studio that was influential in the teaching and promotion of printmaking in the 20th century. Originally located in Paris, the studio relocated to New York during the years surrounding World War II. It moved back to Paris in 1950. History The Atelier 17 studio was formed as an experimental workshop for the graphic arts in Paris, France in 1927 by Stanley William Hayter (1901–1988). Stanley William Hayter
Stanley William Hayter (27 December 1901 – 4 May 1988) was an English painter and printmaker associated in the 1930s with surrealism and from 1940 onward with abstract expressionism. Regarded as one of the most significant printmakers of the 20th century, in 1927 Hayter founded the legendary ''Atelier 17'' studio in Paris. John Egerton Christmas Piper CH (13 December 1903 – 28 June 1992) was an English painter, printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows and both opera and theatre sets. Graham Sutherland
Graham Vivian Sutherland (24 August 1903 – 17 February 1980) was a prolific English artist. Notable for his paintings of abstract landscapes and for his portraits of public figures, Sutherland also worked in other media, including printmaking, tapestry and glass design. Printmaking, mostly of romantic landscapes, dominated Sutherland's work during the 1920s. He developed his art by working in watercolours before switching to using oil paints in the 1940s. John Buckland Wright (1897–1954) was a British printmaker, painter and draughtsman. He worked principally as an etcher and engraver, and was self-taught. Biography Buckland Wright was born on 3 December 1897 in Dunedin, New Zealand. He moved to England in 1908. Buckland Wright studied history at Oxford and then architecture in London. Walter Thomas Monnington
Sir Walter Thomas Monnington PRA (2 October 1902 – 7 January 1976) was an English painter, notable for several large murals, his work as a war artist and for his Presidency of the Royal Academy. Early life and education Monnington was the son of a barrister and although he was born in Westminster, London, he grew up in Sussex before spending time on a farm school at Ross-on-Wye. From 1918 to 1922, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and in 1922 won a three-year scholarship in Decorative Painting to the British School at Rome. In April 1924 Monnington married his fellow art student Winifred Knights. Whilst in Italy, he produced his first large work, ''Allegory'' which was purchased by the Contemporary Art Society and is now in the Tate collection.
