Dave Russell (footballer)
Dave Russell (7 April 1914 – 12 June 2000) was a Scottish football player and manager. He won the Scottish Cup with East Fife in 1938, and was manager of both Bury and Tranmere Rovers for eight years. Playing career Russell played for his hometown club Dundee before joining East Fife. Winning the Scottish Cup in 1938, Russell played 92 games for The Fifers before joining Sheffield Wednesday for the next season, where he was an ever-present as the club finished third in Division Two. As it did with so many players, World War II hampered Russell's career. Managerial career After a stint in the Royal Air Force, Russell became a coach for the Danish Football Association before returning to England in 1950 to take up a coaching role at Bury. In 1953, Russell became the manager and led the Shakers for eight years. The club played 379 games under him between 1953 and 1961, winning 154, losing 139 and drawing 86 match. David Russell (Royal Navy Officer)
David John Russell is a former Royal Navy officer. Russell was born in Leeds in 1952 and attended Leeds Central High School. He joined the Royal Navy in 1970 and commanded three submarines and one surface warship during a career in which he reached the rank of commodore. He was the first commanding officer of HMS ''Vanguard'', the United Kingdom's first Trident missile submarine. Following the September 11 attacks in 2001, he directed the UK submarine response in the campaign against terrorism when UK submarines engaged terrorist targets in Afghanistan with Tomahawk cruise missiles. For a time he was responsible for developing the strategic goals and produced operational deployment, corporate resource and output plans for the UK fleet. David Patrick Hamilton Russell (6 November 1938 – 17 August 2014) was a South African Anglican bishop. Life and ministry Russell was educated at the University of Cape Town. Ordained in 1965, he was a chaplain to migrant workers. From 1975 to 1986 he was banned and house arrested by the South African Apartheid Government. He was a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of St John's (now the Diocese of Mthatha) from 1986 to 1987 and then Bishop of Grahamstown until 2004. Having been born in the late 1930s, Russell got immersed in the struggle against apartheid from an early age. He did his first degree at the University of Cape Town, and then studied for an MA at Oxford University. He did his training for the priesthood at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield, England. He later obtained his PhD in Religious Studies (specialising in Christian Ethics) from the University of Cape Town. Sir David Russell FRSE FLS FSA LLD (1872–1956) was a 20th century Scottish paper manufacturer and philanthropist, remembered as an amateur botanist, photographer and antiquary. His donation of 18,000 photographs to the University of St Andrews forms the core of what is known as the David Russell Collection. He created and oversaw multiple charitable trusts including the David Russell Trust. Life He was born at Silverburn House near Markinch in Fife in 1872, the third son of David Russell (1831-1906). David Abel Russell (1780 – November 24, 1861) was a U.S. Representative from New York. He was born in Petersburg, New York and trained as a lawyer and practiced in Salem, New York. He was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1807. He was District Attorney of the Fourth District from 1813 to 1815. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1816, 1830 and 1833. David Allen Russell (December 10, 1820 – September 19, 1864) was a career United States Army officer who served in the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. He was killed in action as a brigadier general in the Union Army. Early life Russell was born in Salem, New York, the son of David Abel Russell, who was a member of the House of Representatives from 1835 to 1841, and his wife. During his final year in Congress, the senior Russell secured an appointment to the United States Military Academy for his son. The junior Russell graduated near the bottom of his class in 1845. His first assignment was with the U.S. 1st Infantry Regiment. He transferred to the U.S. 4th Infantry Regiment where he served in Mexico.
