David Hand (animator)
David Dodd Hand (January 23, 1900 – October 11, 1986) was an American animator and animation filmmaker known for his work at Walt Disney Productions. He worked on numerous Disney shorts during the 1930s and eventually became supervising director on the animated features ''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'' and ''Bambi''. Biography Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Hand began his animation career working on Max Fleischer's ''Out of the Inkwell'' cartoons throughout the 1920s. He joined the Disney studio in 1930 during a major drive by Disney to recruit from the best of animating talent. Hand immediately made his mark as an animator. By 1932 he was regarded as one of the studio's top animators (despite some complaints that his work was "too mechanical") and had become a close friend of Disney himself. Michael Barrier
Michael J. Barrier (born June 15, 1940) is an American animation historian. Work Barrier was the founder and editor of ''Funnyworld'', the first magazine exclusively devoted to comics and animation. It began as a contribution to the CAPA-Alpha amateur press association. Beginning in 1970 it expanded to being a magazine of general circulation that eventually had a print run of several thousand before ceasing publication in the early 1980s. Barrier was also an early champion of the work of comic book artist Carl Barks, in a period when comic book fandom was mostly devoted to the celebration of superheroes and tended to denigrate talking animal comics. Barrier serialized a bibliography of Barks' work in ''Funnyworld'' and in 1968 contributed an extensive essay analyzing Barks' work to the seventh issue of the Don and Maggie Thompsons' pioneering fanzine ''Comic Art''. The Mad Doctor (1933 Film)
''The Mad Doctor'' is a Mickey Mouse cartoon released in 1933. It is known as the first appearance of the title character "The Mad Doctor", or "Dr. XXX". It was the 52nd Mickey Mouse short film, and the second of that year. Plot The plot centers on the title character, a mad scientist who has kidnapped Mickey's dog, Pluto. Mickey tries to rescue him before the doctor can perform his experiment: putting Pluto's head to the body of a chicken in order to see if a puppy will hatch from an egg (that is if the end result will "bark or crow or cackle"). Mickey battles his way through booby traps and animated skeletons before eventually getting caught and strapped onto a table to get cut open by a buzzsaw, forcing Mickey to suck in his belly, trembling. ''Birds in the Spring'' is a ''Silly Symphonies'' animated Disney short film. It was released in 1933. Plot Various birds are seen building nests and caring for eggs. One pair anxiously awaits the hatching of three eggs, then joyfully summon all the other birds to see their new hatchlings. Time jumps forward to when the hatchlings are fully fledged, learning to sing and fly. One becomes lost and explores the ground, encountering grasshoppers, humming birds and then a rattlesnake that attempts to eat the baby bird. The bird manages to lead the snake into tying itself into a knot, but the chick takes shelter in a hornet's nest. The parents rescue it from the angry hornets, and the film ends with the father bird spanking the chick. ''Old King Cole'' is a 1933 Disney cartoon in the Silly Symphonies series, based on several nursery rhymes and fairy tales, including ''Old King Cole''. It was directed by David Hand and released on July 29, 1933. It's a semi-remake of the 1931 Silly Symphony short '' Mother Goose Melodies'', but in color, with more details and technically advanced animation. Plot One evening in Storyland, the story book “Old King Cole” opens itself, and the king's castle folds open. Other nursery rhyme books do the same thing, and several famous characters leave their homes and go to Old King Cole's party. There, all the characters have a small sing-and-dance act. When the Ten Little Indians get on the stage, their dance is so catchy that Old King Cole and all the other characters join in as well. Summary When a spider goes down into an Egyptian tomb, he instantly regrets going there when the mummies and hieroglyphs come to life. Plot The short film starts near the entrance of the Sphinx in Ancient Egypt, a spider plays his web like a harp. He notices the door shaking and jumps off his web, the door slowly opens up revealing pitch blackness. He creeps up to the open door, and tells us quietly to follow him. Beyond the open door is a long, dark hallway with a few staircases leading downward. The spider gets scared by a falling piece of brick and flees, he then tumbles down a staircase. ''The China Plate'' is a 1931 ''Silly Symphonies'' animated film. Plot The short is based on the Willow pattern legend, with some major differences, including a dragon. There is an oriental scene, the Willow pattern on a china plate, that comes to life, telling the story of two young lovers who are disturbed. First, they have to deal with an angry and overweight Emperor who is the girl's father. He chases after them because the boy disturbed his rest and disapproves of him near his daughter. The two children are then chased by a fire-breathing dragon that eats the emperor (he thought the dragon's open mouth was a cave entrance). Plot Outside, in the middle of a snowstorm, a poor spider clings onto his web beside the hanging sign of a toyshop but is thrown off by the powerful wind. He sneaks in through the door's keyhole and finds himself inside the shop, where he has fun mimicking the sound of a ticking cuckoo clock. The Hunting Of The Snark
''The Hunting of the Snark'', subtitled ''An Agony in 8 Fits'', is a poem by the English writer Lewis Carroll. It is typically categorised as a nonsense poem. Written between 1874 and 1876, it borrows the setting, some creatures, and eight portmanteau words from Carroll's earlier poem "Jabberwocky" in his children's novel ''Through the Looking-Glass'' (1871). The narrative follows a crew of ten trying to hunt the Snark, a creature which may turn out to be a highly dangerous ''Boojum''. The only crewmember to find the Snark quietly vanishes, leading the narrator to explain that the Snark was a Boojum after all. The poem is dedicated to young Gertrude Chataway, whom Carroll met at the English seaside town Sandown in the Isle of Wight in 1875.
