David George McQueen
David George McQueen (1854–1930) was a Presbyterian minister who spent much of his career in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The neighbourhood of McQueen is named in his honour. McQueen was born in Kirkwall, Ontario in 1854, and moved to Edmonton in 1887 upon graduation from Knox College, University of Toronto. He served for 43 years as minister at First Presbyterian Church, and played a role in the founding of several other Edmonton area congregations. He was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Alberta in 1915. His son Alexander died during World War I on June 4, 1916, from wounds sustained during the Battle of Mont Sorrel. His life is chronicled in the book McQueen of Edmonton by E.A. Corbett. Alberta
Alberta ( ) is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is part of Western Canada and is one of the three prairie provinces. McQueen is a residential neighbourhood located in west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is named for the Rev. David George McQueen, who served 43 years as minister at Edmonton's First Presbyterian Church (Edmonton), First Presbyterian Church from 1887 to 1930. Immediately to the north east of McQueen, in the neighbourhood of Woodcroft, Edmonton, Woodcroft is Coronation Park. First Presbyterian Church (Edmonton)
First Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian Church in Canada congregation and Gothic Revival church building in the city's downtown core of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The congregation celebrated its 125th anniversary in November 2006. History The Organizational Meeting for this congregation was held on November 3, 1881, and the first building opened at 104 Street and 99 Avenue a year later. The Battle of Mont Sorrel (''Battle of Mount Sorrel'', ''Battle of Hill 62'') was a local operation in World War I by three divisions of the British Second Army and three divisions of the German 4th Army in the Ypres Salient, near Ypres, Belgium, from 2 to 13 June 1916. To divert British resources from the build-up being observed on the Somme, the XIII (Royal Württemberg) Corps and the 117th Infantry Division attacked an arc of high ground defended by the Canadian Corps. The German forces captured the heights at Mount Sorrel and Tor Top, before entrenching on the far slope of the ridge.
